Lesson 1-4 Pages Properties Lesson Check 1-3

What you will learn! 1. How to identify and use properties of addition and multiplication. 2. How to use the properties to simplify algebraic expressions.

PropertiesCounterexample Simplify Deductive reasoning

Commutative Property The order in which two numbers are added or multiplied does not change the answer!

Associative Property The way in which three numbers are grouped when they are added or multiplied does not change the answer!

Identity Property The sum of a addend and zero is the addend. The product of a factor and one is the factor.

Commutative Property of Addition = Commutative Property of Multiplication 2 x 3 = 3 x 2 Associative Property of Addition (5 + 8) + 2 = 5 + (8 + 2) Associative Property of Multiplication (4 x 6) x 3 = 4 x (6 x 3) Additive Identity = = 9 Multiplicative Identity 7 x 1 = 7 1 x 6 =6 Multiplicative Property of Zero 4 x 0 = 0 0 x 2 = 0

What you really need to know! The Big Question! Did the numbers move, or did the group change?

Example 1: Name the property shown by each statement: = Commutative Property x

Example 2: Name the property shown by each statement: (2 + 5) + m = 2 + (5 + m) Associative Property +

Example 3: Name the property shown by each statement: 17 1 = 17 Multiplicative Identity

Example 4: Find (18 20) 5 mentally. 1,800

Example 5: State whether the following conjecture is true or false. If false, provide a counter example. Division of whole numbers is commutative. False ; 12 ÷ 6 ≠ 6 ÷ 12

Example 7: Simplify the expression: 12 + (x + 18) 30 + x
