∗ We are now using the phrases ‘EMERGING’, ‘EXPECTED’ and ‘EXCEEDING’ to describe your child’s progress against the curriculum for their year group. ∗ By the end of the year most children will be assessed as ‘EXPECTED' age-related attainment and some may be assessed as ’EXCEEDING' age-related attainment. Some pupils may not achieve ’EXPECTED' standards. ∗ In order to do this, we are using a combination of half termly assessments as well as on-going termly teacher assessments. Times Tables You may have heard that the government has announced that all children will be tested on their times tables at the age of 11 (end of KS2). Knowing times tables up to x12 are vital in developing mathematical understanding and to be able to do long division and multiplication in KS2. In Year 2 we learn the 2s, 5s and 10s. All children in Year 2 should be able to recall the multiplication and division facts for these tables. Eg 3 x 5 = 15 So what else do I know? 5 x 3 = 15 and 15 ÷ 3 = 5 and 15 ÷ 5 = 3 Children in Year 1 begin by learning halves and doubles up to 20.

Writing Talk for writing You can help by; Reading stories and talking to your child about activities they do. Sequencing events Handwriting We teach handwriting with a particular emphasis on correct letter formation, pen hold, size and orientation of letters. C, o, a, d, g, r, n, m, h, b, p, etc At home you can help your child hold their pen correctly. In Year 2, children who show they can control the size and orientation of their letters will start to join some letters

Please sign your child’s reading record or planner when you have heard them read and then they can change their reading book. Please talk to your child about what they have read, why characters behaved in particular ways and even what they thought of the story.

SPaG Children learn about: adjectives, nouns, verbs, adverbs, expanded noun phrases, statements, commands, questions, exclamations suffixes (ment, less, ness, full, ly) subordination (when, if, that, because) and coordination (or, but, and) There is a big emphasis on spelling so we will be sending spellings home each week for literacy homework. These will be a mixture of high frequency tricky words and words that follow a particular spelling pattern.
