Service Learning “Is a method of teaching, learning and reflecting that combines academic classroom curriculum with meaningful service, frequently youth service, throughout the community.”youth service community

Benefits of Service Learning Community-based organizations that engage young people in service and service-learning point to the following kinds of benefits: The opportunity to expand their mission and reach without substantially increasing costs by engaging a cadre of competent, motivated young people. New energy, ideas, and enthusiasm as well as specialized skills that young people can bring to the organization. Increased public support and visibility in the community as young people become ambassadors for the agency in their schools, homes, and other networks. New partnerships and resources. A new generation of volunteers for their own organization or cause. Benefits for Service Recipients, Communities, and Society Beyond the young people the organizations directly involve, community-based service- learning benefits the people served, their communities, and, ultimately, society: It meets real needs and priorities for individuals and communities, as young people bring new energy, capacity, and creative ideas. Community residents have opportunities to build positive relationships with young people. Communities see youth in a different way—as resources, not problems. A new generation of caring and experienced citizens, activists, and volunteers is cultivated.

Meet the Blazers Is a gathering of Valdosta locals and VSU basketball players. The gathering is so that the community can get to know the players and play basketball with the athletes'.

Dunk/ 3 Point contest The coach picks his best shooters and dunkers and they compete in front of the fans and friends for a trophy

Skills challenge What happens is the coach/players pick the most skilled participant and they do numerous dribbling drills and shooting drills and whoever wins gets a prize.

Ice Cream Social Numerous kids from all grade levels at Valdosta Middle school came from the football field to get their cup of ice cream after a hard work out outside.

Numerous flavors The kids had a numerous amount of flavors to pick from but the main flavor that the kids choose the most was the M&M chocolate. They also got to choose from Oreos and pecans

Field Day After the social I participated in numerous activities that had something to do with my sport in their field activities. I also helped them out with other activities.

The Learning Experience I learned how to interact with my peers and the kids better going to these community service events. Its good to give back to your community especially when they support you at every single basketball game.
