National Aeronautics and Space Administration Usability Work Update

Active Projects PDS Home Page Redesign “Standard Volume View” Instrument Team Interviews UI Design for Vtool Web Usability Workshop

User-Centered Design Approach Design must satisfy use cases that we want to support, in priority order Test with users to make sure they successfully perform the use cases Refine the design based on test feedback Make it work, then make it pretty

Design Milestones Discover users, roles, and use cases Design page flow to support use cases Create mockups for user testing User testing and refinement Final visual design (ooh, aah) (And iteration among these steps!)

Mockups and User Testing Mockups are primarily textual –Less “chrome” to distract users from the interaction and flow User testing: using VNC remote desktop software to allow remote testing

Home Page Redesign Status HTML mockups created for major use cases Ready to begin user testing and refinement

Problems to Solve Somewhat confusing menus Low fan-out (# of outgoing links) Wasted real estate / Low data-ink ratio Use cases not well supported –Dead-ends / No appropriate destination Search quality

Layout Changes Text search on every page Denser left menu Role-based links on home page Designated location for news items Larger design width

Home Page Open Issues Competitive analysis –Make sure we steal all the good ideas from similar data portals What is an ideal search result?

What’s Next Design milestones incorporated into overall project plan, owned by Engineering, presented next More new content for missing or dead- end destinations –E.g., Mars page (currently no outgoing links)

Home Page: How to Help Review use cases (at least the TOC) Comment on mockups: flow, layout, but not visual design (yet) Suggest good users to test against Participate in or observe user testing Help define “ideal search”

New Volume View Status Mockups for MOLA and CIRS converted from paper to HTML (mostly) Almost ready to begin user testing Need to finish use case document Perform user testing as 2nd phase beyond home page redesign

Volume View: How to Help Feedback on use cases Mockup review Suggest additional (or different) data sets Compare with your existing tools
