Highlighting and Annotating Why do we highlight? To call our attention to important information that we read while researching our sources. This makes it so we don’t have to re-read the source again and again every time we need information. Why do we annotate? To remember why we thought something was worth highlighting. To help us think about how we’ll use the information we’re highlighting.

Your Job 1.Highlight all of your sources and annotate them as well. 2.EVERY TIME you highlight something, you MUST annotate it as well. This helps you remember why you annotated something. 3.Each source should have multiple highlights and annotations. There is no set number. 4.If you aren’t sure how much to highlight, consider that you will have to write paragraphs of information using these sources. More is better, but too much will be overwhelming. If it helps answer your question, highlight it.

Steps for Topic Notecards OBJECTIVE: Organize our research into manageable categories. 1.Number each of your sources, Go to your highlighting and annotations of your articles Ask yourself: which details could help explain or answer my questions? Why are these details necessary? 3.On a notecard: On the front (with the lines), write the FULL quotation, source number, and citation. Write the number of our source in the upper left hand corner 4.On the back of this notecard, write WHY/HOW this quotation relates to your question (See the source card paper for more info.)

Divide into Topics Since we’re trying to organize, it’s time to categorize our information! Final Step: Try to consider how your research is broken down into different topics. THINK! What issues will I have to address/prove in this paper, and how does my research help me to those ends? When you’ve decided a breakdown, write your topic on a notecard and give it a corresponding letter (A, B, C, etc). Place your topic card on top, then place your supporting details from your research underneath, making a stack of topics and supports. Label your support cards with topic letters as well.
