1 Science Definition Team Meeting National Aerospace Institute Hampton, VA Dec 1-3, 2015

2 144 papers as of September 2015 submitted in the Earth Science Division's Publication Database to date ( in 2015: 11 published/in press journal papers 1 submitted paper 6 papers in preparation CLARREO BAMS cover paper received the NASA Langley H.J.E. Reid Award for most outstanding NASA Langley publication CLARREO SDT Report updated with 2015 accomplishments Summary Publication Accomplishments 2015

3 Summary Publication Accomplishments for 2015 CLARREO citation metrics based on 144 articles in ESD Pubs archive: Sum of Times Cited (1173) and Average Time Cited (9.54).

LaRC/GSFC Meeting Nov 16, NASA internal Use Only Second VOI Paper In Press Economic Value of Advanced Accuracy Climate Observations Added the costs of carbon emissions reductions to the VOI calculations Added the ability to select emission scenario based on observations Improved the relationship between Global Domestic Product (GDP) and carbon emissions after changing emission scenarios Changes addressed the most important criticisms of the 2014 paper VOI changes from $12 Trillion (2014 paper) to $9 Trillion (2015 paper) at 3% nominal discount rate. Remains a very high return on investment New results accepted for publication in the journal Climate Policy, Cooke et al. 2015, "Real Option Value of Earth Observing Systems" in press.

LaRC/GSFC Meeting Nov 16, NASA internal Use Only CLARREO Pathfinder mission included in the Presidents FY16 proposed budget to Congress Launch 2019/2020 on International Space Station (ISS) Includes 1 or 2 spectrometers depending on funding resources available Tight Budget ($77M: less than an EV-I instrument build). Class D. Depends on Congress passing an increase in NASA Earth Science in FY16: currently looking favorable in Congressional discussions. More information in a session on Wed Afternoon, including ISS lunar, solar, and intercalibration sampling studies CLARREO Pathfinder

Invited Talks Recent Key Invited Talks on CLARREO and VOI: AOGS (Asian AGU): August, 2015 in Singapore (Mlynczak) including NASA hyperwall Comparative Climates of Terrestrial Planets: Sept, 2015 at NASA Ames (Wielicki) USGCRP Subcommittee on Global Change Research: Sept 2015 in Washington, DC (Wielicki and Betsy Weatherhead) Earth-Sun Decadal Variability Symposium: Nov 2015 in Savannah, GA (Wielicki) WMO Space 2040 Workshop: Nov 2015, Geneva (Wielicki)

LaRC/GSFC Meeting Nov 16, NASA internal Use Only FY 2016 HQ Guidance Letter Continue CDS calibration extension, testing, and collaborations with other instrument projects (PACE, RBI, etc) Continue to evaluate potential collaborations with ISRO and UK Continue the light weight instrument design studies for CLARREO Continue the optimal fingerprinting evaluation and reflected solar radiative transfer OSSEs with respect to CLARREO Continue development of the Polarization Dependence Models for CLARREO Update the comprehensive development report of the CLARREO mission study as appropriate

LaRC/GSFC Meeting Nov 16, NASA internal Use Only Key journal papers we still need to publish: Orbit sampling for spectral fingerprints Instrument calibration papers based on IIP and CDS developments. Requirements as a function of wavelength for IR, RS (temperature, water vapor, and cloud properties) Continued OSSE, spectral fingerprint, and reference intercalibration papers Continued development and improvement of the USGCRP white paper on lack of a climate observing system, economic value, design methods Continue to improve the SDT Summary Report for the CLARREO web site and for background support of decadal survey white paper Decadal Survey phase 2 white papers (TBD on content/format/schedule) Support studies for CLARREO Pathfinder (e.g. ISS accommodation) as necessary and depending on NASA Congressional budget 2016 Key SDT Tasks

LaRC/GSFC Meeting Nov 16, NASA internal Use Only Meeting Objectives Review Science, Project and Engineering Progress: IR, RS, RO CLARREO Pathfinder Status NRC Continuity Report and 2017 Decadal Survey Status USGCRP, OSTP EOA-II and WMO Space 2040 climate observations update CLARREO international collaboration status
