Unit Questions What does the American and Texas flags look like? Why are there stars and stripes? What is the Pledge of Allegiance? Why is it important to vote? Why do we need to know about our country?
Voting in any type of election, from local elections to Presidential primaries, provides an important way to voice your opinions regarding elected leaders and overall policies; voting also helps you decide your own future by electing a person who might reflect your own views. The ability to vote exists as one of the most cherished Constitutional Rights that many fought for, marched for, and died for over the centuries. (Smithstein)

The student understands important customs, symbols, and celebrations that represent American beliefs and principles and contribute to our national identity. The student is expected to: (A) identify the flags of the United States and Texas; (B) recite the Pledge of Allegiance; and (C) explain the use of voting as a method for group decision making.
