January 8, 2016 Center for Innovative Science Education

Plan for morning Help yourself to food and coffee Messaging the Framework Important points made by Pruitt Reviewing the draft NYSSLS Discussing the NYSSLS Survey Plans for next meeting and next year Pilot study

Introductions Introduce yourself and share what you are hopeful about related to the impending new science standards.

Messaging the Framework What should everyone know about the first three chapters in the Framework? Develop three messages (assertions, claims, statements) –Write 3 proof points (facts, statistics, short quote, anecdote) to support each message One message per 3x5 card We will share them (verbally and written)

Pruitt’s 2012 NSTA Talk Each table share one thing from Pruitt’s talk that we need to thinking about moving forward with new standards. Share your rationale for selection

Draft NYSSLS Adopted the topical arrangement 14 new PEs K-HS 9 PEs for Pre-K added Altered approximately 30 PEs –SED did not mark these clearly Various changes to DCI (insertions, deletions, and partial edits)

Generalizations More changes in middle and high school. Earth and Space Science has the least amount of changes There are some changes that alter the PE significantly No noted changes to science & engineering practices or cross-cutting concepts. The three dimensionality of the NGSS remains –This will require a significant shift K-12

Draft NYSSLS Discussion Two stages 1.General review (15-20 minutes) – Note any –Things you are happy to see –Concerns –Wonderings 2.Focused review – Take I look at one topic at one grade level (15-20 minutes) –Get into new groups –Chart any important findings form focus review

Survey Released Dec. 8 th and will be open until Feb. 5 th Criteria referenced survey Four focus areas (total of 43 questions) –Organization of standards –Coherence –Clarity and specificity –Content and rigor One question for general feedback One question for general comments about implementation

Group Feedback In your groups review the area assigned and discuss the ranking of each question based on our previous discussion. Report out to group your assessment with rationale.

General Feedback You have 10 minutes to create a 3x3 feedback message about the draft NYSSLS –Write your message on the feedback form.

Curriculum Materials Pilot Study Selecting two commercially available curriculum materials to pilot test in the field Physical Science: Matter and Its Interaction –2 nd Grade focus on observable properties of matter –5 th Grade focus on developing a particle model understanding of matter, conservation of mass, mixing of matter, and measurable properties Content is congruent with current standards

Pilot Study Requirements Students and teachers take a pre and post test related to content Videotaping lessons Photocopy of student work Copies of all lesson and unit planning artifacts Record of duration and frequency of instruction Teacher survey Two teacher interviews with Jessica

Pilot Study Need responses by February 5 th We are limited to the number of classroom we can supply pilot materials to Make selection decisions to maximize diversity of classrooms included Participants will receive –All materials they need to teach the unit –Support to initiate the unit –Districts will receive two days of on-site PD –Teachers will receive on permanent loan instructional materials valuing approximately $200

Next Meeting Tuesday, May 17 th, 2016 at Science Center Read Chapter 4, 9, and 10 plus one of the following: –Ch. 5: DCI Physical Sciences –Ch. 6: DCI Life Sciences –Ch. 7: DCI Earth and Space Sciences
