UNIT 1a: HEALTHY, ACTIVE LIFESTYLES 5 TH SEPTEMBER 2012

LEARNING OBJECTIVES BY THE END OF THE LESSON YOU WILL: KNOW THE DEFINITIONS OF LEISURE, RECREATION, ACTIVE LEISURE & PHYSICAL ACTIVITY UNDERSTAND THE REQUIREMENTS FOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY TO TAKE PLACE BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN WHAT MASS PARTICIPATION IS AND DESCRIBE INITIATIVES TO PROMOTE IT

ACTIVITY 1 WHAT IS A HEALTHY, ACTIVE LIFESTYLE? WHAT DO YOU THINK IT SHOULD LOOK LIKE? DISCUSS WITH THE PERSON NEXT TO YOU

HEALTHY, ACTIVE LIFESTYLE PHYSICALLY ACTIVE (30 MIN MODERATE ACTIVITY ON MOST DAYS OF THE WEEK) BALANCED DIET FREE FROM ILLNESS MENTAL HEALTH

DEFINITIONS LEISURE: PERIOD OF TIME SPENT OUR OF WORK AND ESSENTIAL DOMESTIC ACTIVITY RECREATION: USE OF TIME IN A MANNER DESIGNED FOR THERAPEUTIC REFRESHMENT OF ONE’S BODY OR MIND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY: ANY MOVEMENT THAT EXPENDS ENERGY

ACTIVE LEISURE & RECREATION LEISURE TIME HAS INCREASED IN RECENT HISTORY, DUE TO MANY FACTORS THERE IS A LARGER AMOUNT OF CHOICE OF HOW TO SPEND LEISURE TIME THIS MAY CONTRIBUTE TO THE DECREASE IN ACTIVE LEISURE ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN CHANGES IN WORK HAVE ALSO LED TO THE DECREASE

ACTIVITY 2 HOW COULD THE GOVERNMENT INCREASE THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE INVOLVED IN ACTIVE LEISURE?

MASS PARTICIPATION LOTS OF PEOPLE TAKING PART IN AN ACTIVITY 2 REASONS FOR A NATION TO PROMOTE MASS PARTICIPATION: – HEALTH – ACTIVE PEOPLE ARE HEALTHIER, THEREFORE LESS MONEY SPENT ON HOSPITAL TREATMENT – SPORTING SUCCESS – MORE PEOPLE TO CHOOSE FROM, HIGHER STANDARD OR COMPETITION, THEREFORE BETTER STANDARD AT THE TOP LEVEL

“SPORT FOR ALL” 1 INITIATIVE IN THE UK TO INCREASE PARTICIPATION AIMING TO HELP PEOPLE OVERCOME BARRIERS TO PARTICIPATION EG. 50+ BADMINTON SESSIONS CRECHE FACILITIES FOR MOTHERS TO BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE PLACES PEOPLE PLAY (SPORT ENGLAND)

ACTIVITY 3 WHAT REASONS COULD ACCOUNT FOR A LACK OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY? LACK OF TIME LACK OF MONEY NO TRANSPORT NO FACILITIES NOT FIT ENOUGH NOT SKILLED ENOUGH

REQUIREMENTS FOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY 1.FITNESS MANY ASSUME THEY DO NOT HAVE SUFFICIENT FITNESS TO TAKE PART FITNESS CAN BE GAINED & MAINTAINED SOME ACTIVITIES WOULD NEED A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF FITNESS, EG. CLIMBING

2.ABILITY LINKED TO CONFIDENCE A PERSON NEEDS TO HAVE SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE SOME ACTIVITIES REQUIRE VERY LITTLE EXPERIENCE, EG. POWER WALKING REQUIREMENTS FOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

3.RESOURCES 3 MAIN PARTS: PHYSICAL EQUIPMENT, PEOPLE & MONEY YOU CAN’T GO MOUNTAIN CLIMBING IF THERE IS NO MOUNTAIN! SOME ACTIVITIES REQUIRE VERY LITTLE EQUIPMENT A COUNTRY MUST HAVE THE ECONOMIC WILL AND CULTURAL DESIRE, EG. KENYA REQUIREMENTS FOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

4.TIME LACK OF TIME IS KNOWN AS “THE WESTERN DISEASE” INCREASED LEISURE TIME, BUT INCREASED SOCIAL DEMANDS MORE CHOICE HAS LED TO LESS ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS FOR PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

FOR EACH OF THE 4 REQUIREMENTS: GIVE AN EXAMPLE OF A SOCIETAL GROUP WHO MIGHT NOT BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE BECAUSE…….. GIVE AN EXAMPLE OF A SOCIETAL GROUP WHO CAN PARTICIPATE BECAUSE…. ACTIVITY 4

FOR EXAMPLE A WORKING CLASS MAN MAY NOT BE ABLE TO PLAY GOLF AS IT IS TOO EXPENSIVE A WORKING CLASS MAN WOULD BE ABLE TO RUN AS IT REQUIRES INEXPENSIVE EQUIPMENT

AVAILABLE ON WIKISPACE YEAR 12; MR RIDGWAY TRY TO FIND SOME UK MASS PARTICIPATION INITIATIVES ON THE INTERNET NAME THEM AND DESCRIBE THE KEY FEATURES OF THE INITIATIVE EG. PLACES PEOPLE PLAY WHAT ARE THE OBJECTIVES? HOW DOES IT WORK? DUE WEDNESDAY 12 TH SEPTEMBER HOMEWORK
