PIIC is… a partnership of the Annenberg Foundation and the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE). a statewide resource for developing and supporting consistent, high-quality instructional coaching in PA schools through ongoing professional development and IU Coach Mentor support. a secondary instructional coaching model with a focus on embedding research-based literacy practices in content-area classrooms.

The PIIC Model The Four Quadrants 1)Working one-on-one and in small groups to support teachers, coaches, and other school leaders 2)Using evidence-based literacy practices 3)Supporting reflective and non-evaluative practice 4)Focusing on collecting and analyzing data to assess student needs.

The Questions Game (Testing Our PIIC Veterans) Step 1: Turn and Talk with a Partner ▫Each partner asks his/her question and points to the passage in the brochure that prompted the question. ▫Partners attempt to answer questions. Questions that remain unanswered will move to the next round.

The Questions Game (Testing Our PIIC Veterans) Step 2: Pairs join another pair. (Group of 4) Veteran PIIC coaches, spread out and make sure there’s one of you in each foursome. Partners share their remaining questions with each other. Groups try to answer questions. Step 3: Whole Group Groups pose question to the whole group.

Prepping Your Dish Using the chart paper provided… Reflect on the following: 1)Describe the delicate coach-teacher relationship, and how can that relationship be fostered to form an ongoing partnership to improve instruction and increase student learning? 2)What is the coach’s role in providing professional development? 3)How can coaches foster a culture of coaching in their buildings?

Creating Your Masterpiece (A mixture of thought, expertise, and art) Use pictures, charts or diagrams. Be creative and have fun! Process one question at a time ▫Each person shares his/her answers using the text provided. ▫Be sure that all questions are processed and that everyone responds to each question. ▫Use a visual to represent your group’s thinking for each question.

Around the World in 30 Minutes Choose one representative from your group who will play the role of the host serving up “the dish” (or poster) your group has created. This person stays with your poster for the remainder of the activity. Guests split up and rotate to any area of the room you would like. Avoid traveling as a group. Add something new to the posters you see.
