(1) People v Anderson

The police asked Geraldine Grand if she had a picture of Anderson. She gave them a picture. They left the apartment building and thought they saw Anderson. Anderson saw the police, turned around and started walking away.

(1) People v Anderson The police followed him and told him to stop. He started running and the police gave chase. The police saw him toss something. One of the officers stopped to pick up the tossed item (a handgun). The other officer was able to stop Anderson. He frisked Anderson and recovered a packed of a white powdery substance the officer thought was cocaine.

When the passenger exited the vehicle he slipped out of the coat he was wearing. The officers smelled burnt marijuana in the car. The officer asked them if they had been smoking, and the passenger said “maybe.” The officer looked into the car and noticed some loose marijuana leaves in the center console.

(2) People v Passe They looked around and saw nothing else. The police then picked up the jacket the passenger was wearing and thought that it was heavy for a coat. The officer felt the jacket and thought he felt a gun. The officer reached into the jacket and pulled out a handgun.

(2) People v Passe When he removed the handgun a packet of marijuana dropped out of the pocket. The passenger was arrested.
