Presentation transcript:

Photosynthesis is cellular respiration in reverse for plants  In animals, we use GLUCOSE and OXYGEN to create energy.  The mitochondria (power plant) converts these into cellular electricity  ATP!  In animals, the waste products produced are CO2 and H20  PHOTOSYNTHESIS is the exact opposite!!!!!!!! Let’s think some more about this…

What does a plant need?  SUNLIGHT (or….grow light)  Water  And…CO2 (what plants breathe in)  So, plants use SUNLIGHT, WATER, and CO2 to create energy  ATP, just like in humans

What do plants produce as waste products?  Hint: Plants make just what humans need for cellular respiration Remember, humans need Oxygen and GLUCOSE... And, that is exactly what plants produce as waste after they’ve made their ATP! Plants produce OXYGEN and GLUCOSE (as fruit, or in their bodies for us to eat!)

Finally, HYDROLYSIS  Hydro = water  Lysis = splitting  Hydrolysis = water splitting  Just like cellular respiration involves GLYCOLYSIS (sugar splitting) as the first step of the process, the first step of photosynthesis is to split WATER into parts.

So, Cell Respiration and Photosynthesis work together  Plants:  Sunlight + CO2 + H20  ENERGY (ATP) + Glucose + O2  Animals:  O2 + Glucose  ENERGY (ATP) + CO2 + H2O  Plants waste products are our FOOD and AIR (O2)  Our waste products are plants’ WATER and AIR (CO2)

ATP CO 2 and H 2 O Glucose Chloroplast Mitochondria O 2

How do plants capture energy from the sun? They must contain:  Chlorophyll – a green pigment that can capture light energy  Chlorophyll is found in the chloroplasts, organelles in plant cells

Chloroplast – organelle in green plant cells
