Introduction of the programme INCREASING THE LEVEL OF LITERACY Marjana Egredzija

ABOUT THE PROGRAMME The programme was developed by Slovenian Institute for Adult Education Duration: 120 hours Implementation: once a week (4 hours) Marjana Egredzija

Main areas of education in “My Step”:  Improvement of Basic Skills and competence  Improvement of Social Skills  Lifelong Learning  Active Citizenship Marjana Egredzija

The programme is designed for adults with special needs, who have completed or dropped educational programmes with adapted implementation. These are persons who: -are not able to include in labour market, - are not able to participate in professional training due to their handicap and need of assistance in care and protection, - with speech and language disorders, physical disabilities etc. Target group: Marjana Egredzija

VDC Radovljica VDC is implementing services regarding SAFETY, GUIDENCE and EMPLOYMENT UNDER SPECIAL CONDITIONS for adults with mental and physical development disorders. Their services include : SOCIAL CARE EMPLOYMENTS EDUCATION AND LITERACY Adult Education Centre Jesenice in cooperation with Marjana Egredzija

During their education, people with special needs were facing different problems: -Inability to read and understand short instructions and messages - rapid decline in concentration and motivation when confronted with things they don’t understand – need for specific teaching approaches - VERBAL UNDERSTANDING IS SUFFICIENT their expressing is difficult and unsatisfying, sometimes disrespectful - they are committed to work and conscientious; they like routine Marjana Egredzija

- worksheets, arithmetic exercises, word games Practical solutions: -Comprehensive treatment of each individual - Training of associations – workshop “what does my name mean”, strong emphasis on discussion … Marjana Egredzija

Options for people with special needs They are used to routine and need a lot of repetition in order to maintain achievement. VDC and similar institutions Adult education centre  Employment and integration into the community – maintaining of motor skills  care for personal hygiene, dressing, eating, living etc.  Professionally qualified staff.  Quality education.  Public-approved education programmes.  Flexibility.  Quality arranged and adjusted class-rooms. People with special needs and education In Slovenia there is no systematic education for people with special needs (over the 21 years of age) who have completed their formal education. + = + Marjana Egredzija
