ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Nichole Meeks Sociology/ Social Networks 5 th Socializing in the 21 st century

ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Goals: Introduce students to popular social networking sites and encourage them to explore and understand how to use them. Objectives: Content/Knowledge: Students will familiarize themselves with the latest form of socialization, social networks by engaging in various activities and projects designed to deepen understanding of how to use these networks. Process/Skills: Analyzing Applying Synthesizing Values/Dispositions: Receiving Responding Organization Characterization

ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Rationale: With technology becoming an ever present part of everyday life for students of all ages, it is important to education them early about how to use social networking in a safe and appropriate manner. Standards: State – Illinois Common Core or Learning Standards 18.A.2 Explain ways in which language, stories, folk tales, music, media and artistic creations serve as expressions of culture. National – NCSS Themes People, Places, and Environment Continuity, Time, and Change

Logical/Mathematical

Logical/Mathematical Students will conduct a school wide survey asking students to anonymously indicate which, if any, social networking websites they use. Choices may include: Facebook Myspace Flickr Twitter LinkedIn None Other The results of this survey will be compiled and converted into a bar graph by students

Interpersonal

Interpersonal Students will be divided into groups so that there is one group assigned to each social network from the survey. The groups will research and prepare a presentation for their classmates on the basic use of their network and the pros and cons of use.

Musical/Rhythmic

Musical/Rhythmic Students will work within their groups to create a song or jingle that could be used in an advertisement for their social network. The song should catch the interest of listeners and make them want to use the networking site.

Visual/Spatial

Visual/Spatial Students will create a video to accompany their song about the social network that they were assigned. The video should serve as a commercial enticing potential customers to want to join the network over others.

Verbal/Linguistic

Verbal/Linguistic The students from each group will present their poster and commercial to their classmates. Reports should explain how to use the website, the demographics of people using the website, reasons for using it, and the benefits and drawbacks of the website.

Intrapersonal

Intrapersonal Students will create their own real life “social network” by constructing a poster with their picture, interests, pictures of friends/family/pets, statistics such as age and birthday, and whatever else they would likely include on a Facebook or MySpace page.

Body/Kinesthetic

Body/Kinesthetic When the posters are completed, students will prop their own up on their desks and “visit” their classmates’ pages by rotating around the classroom. There should be a piece of paper on the desk for students to “post” appropriate and positive comments about each others’ pages.

Naturalistic

Naturalistic To close the unit, the teacher will set up web pages for classroom use using some of the various social networks discussed in class. The web pages should be private to outside users, restricted, shared with parents and administration, and closely monitored. Students will have the opportunity to log into the web pages during class time and explore the features of each.
