The Respiratory System
Functions of the Respiratory System 1.Provides gas exchange between air and circulating blood 2.Produces sounds-speaking, singing 3.Participates in olfactory sense
Components of the Respiratory System
Anatomy of the Epiglottis Epiglottis- flap that covers the trachea
Anatomy of the Larynx
Larynx The vocal cords are made of two bands of muscle. When we talk, the vocal cords tighten up and move closer together. Air from the lungs is forced between them and makes them vibrate, producing the sound of our voice. The tongue, lips, and teeth form this sound into words.
Anatomy of the Trachea
The Trachea Also called the windpipe Branches into right and left bronchi
Inside the Lungs Bronchioles- air branches in the lungs
Inside the Lungs Alveoli- air sacs in the lungs that exchange O 2 with CO 2
Anatomy of the Diaphragm Diaphragm- The main muscle that contracts and relaxes to allow breathing
Breathing with the Diaphragm INHALING EXHALING
Common Problems with the Respiratory System
Pneumonia Pneumonia- infection of the lungs that results in an inflammation of the small air spaces of the lung. Pneumonia reduces the lungs' ability to receive and distribute oxygen. It can be mild and easily cured with antibiotics and rest, or it can be severe and require hospitalization.
Pneumonia
Bronchitis Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchiole tubes. It can be caused by bacteria or viruses.
Emphysema Emphysema The disease in which the alveoli lose their elasticity, thus making it hard to breathe.
Asthma Asthma is a disorder in which the airways become narrow and clogged with mucus.
