[1]A self-taught photographer, gordon Parks grew up in Fort Scott, Kansas. [2]after winning a rosenwald Fellowship for a series of pictures about life in Chicago’s Slums, He got his first full-time photography job with the Fam Security Administration in Washington, D.C.[3]In 1949, he joined the staff of Life magazine.[4]During his nearly twenty years with Life, Parks covered assignments ranging from Junior High School science conventions to Paris Fashion Shows.[5]He also wrote many of the essays that accompanied his photographs, as well as two Volumes of autobiography, A Choice of Weapons and Voices in the Mirror. [6]turning to a career in the movie industry in 1968, Parks moved to Hollywood, where his son Gordon Parks, jr., took this photograph of him preparing to direct a scene from the film version of The Learning Tree.[7]Parks also wrote the film’s screenplay and, working at the grand piano in his Hollywood apartment, its musical score.[8]His success with the film led to other writing and directing projects, including Leadbelly, the story of the blues musician Huddie ledbetter. [9]In September 1997, an exhibition of his photography opened at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, D.C. [10]Some of his best-known projects have included Voices in the Mirror and the words and music from Martin, a classical Ballet honoring the late dr. martin luther king, jr.
