Agenda Schedule Introductions Conclusions

Schedule Today: Introductions, Conclusions Thursday: Final edits Friday: Final draft due. Turn in the comments from your first draft.

Introductions Your introduction should be only slightly broader than the body of your essay. Your introduction should orient your reader. Do not refer to humanity, do not refer to large stretches of history. Your introduction should lead to your thesis.

Introductions For your personal narrative, your thesis should be the lesson that you learned. The lesson should appear at the end of the introduction. Overall, your essay should be organized in chronological order. The introduction is a good place for you to put background material. It is likely that the first paragraph of your current essay, with some minor edits, can become your introduction. Try to write your introduction now by placing your lesson at the end of your first paragraph. Make sure that your introduction flows and that there is a smooth transition between background and lesson. Let me know if you are having trouble.

Introductions For your personal narrative, your thesis should be the lesson that you learned. The lesson should appear at the end of the introduction. The verb tense of your lesson in your introduction will require you to use the helping verb “would” in order to indicate a time in the past before you would learn the lesson.

Conclusions Your conclusion should give a sense of completeness to your essay and it should solidify your most important point.

Conclusions For your personal narrative, your conclusion should reinforce the lesson that you have learned. It would also be appropriate to consider the limitations of your lesson. Because your personal narrative is organized in a chronological fashion, your conclusion should dwell on the time after the primary sequence of events. You might describe the consequences of the sequence of events.

Conclusions Your introduction and conclusion should be the only places in your essay where you make general points. It might be necessary for you to move general points from the body of your essay to your introduction or conclusion.

Conclusions Try to write your conclusion now.

Homework Write your conclusion before tomorrow. Tomorrow we will do final edits. Try to have your introduction and conclusion complete.
