The Northern Island Brown Kiwi By: Nicole Doemling

Introduction I chose the Northern Island Brown Kiwi ,because I went to wellington, New Zealand for my cousin David’s wedding ,on March 2,2007 . On our journey to Newzeland , we brought up the idea to go to the wellington zoo, so we did .The day after the wedding ,we went to the wellington zoo with my family . We saw a ton of animals at the zoo that day ,including kangaroos ,emus ,and tigers, but the most amazing was the Northern Island Brown Kiwi. The person that was talking about the Northern Island Brown Kiwi ,she got me so interested because the animal is almost endangered . That is how I decided to do The Northern Island Brown Kiwi for my animal report . So I could find out more information on the Northern Island Brown Kiwi. I hope you and I will learn more later on.

Body characteristics Are you ready! Well ,I am ready to learn about the body characteristics ! Northern Island Brown Kiwi grow to the size of the size of a chicken. Wow that’s pretty small! The northern island brown kiwi weights between 3to 9 pounds, and they are very light. The kiwi doesn’t have a tail on its little body, and it has two inch wing span. Wow! The Kiwi has sharp three toed feet, and nostrils at the lower end of the beak. The length of the Kiwi is 20 centimeters , and the height of the Kiwi is 20 percent more than the male Kiwi, the male Kiwi weights 2.2.kg (4.85)and the female weights 2.8kg(6.17). That’s a big difference. The Kiwi has grey and brown stubby and coarse but dense feathers . The whiskers of the Kiwi sensitive hairs around the bill to help the Kiwi feel around for its food. The Kiwi’s feet are for running thorough forests . That is my body characteristic hoped you loved it because I know I enjoyed sharing it with you.

Food and Nutrition Next , I am going to tell you about the Northern Island Brown Kiwi’s ,food and nutrition! Hope It won’t make you hungry! First I am going to tell you when the Northern Island Brown Kiwi eats. The Northern island Brown Kiwi is nocturnal so it eats during the night. Hopefully the Kiwi doesn't get scared, because it is dark! The next thing is what the Kiwi eats. The Kiwi eats some weird things like worms , insects, grubs, leaves , berries ,seeds ,and occasionally small reptiles ,or amphibians. The next thing is how the Kiwi’s find there food. Kiwi’s smell to find their food and uses their tip of their nostrils to find it’s food . Also the Kiwi scratches through dead leaves with their claws ,and probes with their bill to smell and feel for there prey. The kiwis favorite food is earth worms! YUCK! That is all the Food and Nutrition for the Northern Island Brown Kiwi. Hope you liked the Food and Nutrition as much as I did!

Habitat Next I am going to tell you about the kiwis habitat ! The kiwi is located in New Zealand in the northern island . The kiwi can be found in the subtropical area’s and scrublands, and native forests . The kiwi lives in groups, I would live in groups ,because there so small to keep them safe. The kiwi's main habitat is the forest and in swamps. They use to live in coniferous, but now they live in hollow logs. The kiwi also calls to its mate to keep in contact in the dense forests. That is all for now for the habit for the Northern Island Brown kiwi. Hope you liked it as much as I did!

Life Cycle Next, I am going to tell you about the Northern Island Brown Kiwis Life Cycle. The kiwi hatches out of a egg, the egg color when the kiwi is still in the egg is Ivory or greenish white. It is also like a moss color, and the egg is very smooth Unlike a rock. When the kiwi comes out of an egg it is still has shaggy adult Plumage. When the Kiwi comes out of an egg it does not get feed by their Parents the kiwi has a large yolk in their belly to feed off of when it is a baby. The kiwi’s eggs are proportionately larger compared to the size of a female or Male egg. That is all for the life cycle of the Northern Is land Brown Kiwi.

Enemies and survival functions Next, I am going to tell you about the kiwis Enemies And survival Functions! The kiwis enemies are dogs cat and stoat a stoat is an ox or a bull. A signal dog can kill 500 kiwis in a week that is a lot of dead kiwis. Kiwis are nocturnal so they have less enemies. I bet the kiwis are saying yep-eee we don’t have a lot of enemies! The kiwis can adapt to different places, but I am not saying the kiwi can adapt to Antarctica when it first gets there because first it takes some time to place is so cold, to adapt. I hoped you liked enemies and survival as much as I did!

Interesting Facts The kiwi got its name from the call it uses to mate The kiwi is related to the emu and the ostrich The kiwi species are endangered The kiwi stays with their parents forever till death The largest species is the Great Spotted Kiwi The Kiwi is one of the oddest birds That is all for now about the interesting facts of the kiwi. Hope you learned something interesting.

The kiwis favorite habitat is the forest, the kiwi can also adapt to lots of different places. The kiwi is nocturnal, so it does not have much enemies!
