FOOD SECURITY AND POSTHARVEST LOSSES

FOOD SECURITY AND POSTHARVEST LOSSES

Food is lost or wasted throughout the supply chain, from initial agricultural production down to final household consumption. In low-income countries food is lost mostly during the early and middle stages of the food supply chain; much less food is wasted at the consumer level (FAO, 2011). Overall, on a per-capita basis, much more food is Wasted in the industrialized world than in developing countries. We estimate that the per capita food waste by consumers in Europe and North-America is kg/year, while this figure in sub-Saharan Africa and South/Southeast Asia is only 6-11 kg/year (FAO, 2011). FAO

Food losses and their prevention have an impact on the environment, food security for poor people, food quality and safety, and economic development. The exact causes of food losses vary throughout the world and are very much dependent on the specific conditions and local situation in a given country (FAO, 2014). Central Market of SLP FAO

CENTRAL MARKET OF SAN LUIS POTOSI Postharvest management of fruit and vegetables

CENTRAL MARKET OF SAN LUIS POTOSI In low-income countries food is lost mostly during the early and middle stages of the food supply chain; much less food is wasted at the consumer level (FAO, 2011). It is necessary capacitation and inversion in technology.

Low inversion in fields = food losses. TOCOY, SAN ANTONIO-SAN LUIS POTOSI It is necessary capacitation and inversion.

DIAGNOSIS AND ESTIMATION OF POST-HARVEST LOSSES IN SAN LUIS POTOSÍ Worldwide, large quantities of the food produced will not reach the consumer. These losses vary between 30 and 40% and it occurs during the different stages of the food supply chain. There are not systematic studies in Mexico focused to estimate post- harvest losses in major crops since forty years ago. Therefore, the objectives of the present study consist of the design of methodologies for identify the critical points in the postharvest chain and perform the strategies for correcting the practices and controlling the factors that increase postharvest losses of citrus and coffee in field and the Central Market of San Luis Potosi city.
