Crucible Examples of Ad Hominem Act I Pg. 187 HALE: Soup? What sort of soup were in this kettle, Abigail? ABIGAIL: Why, it were beans—and lintels, I think, and— HALE: Mister Parris, you did not notice, did you—any living thing in the kettle? A mouse, perhaps, a spider, a frog? ABIGAIL: That frog jumped in, we never put it in! HALE: Abigail, it may be your cousin is dying—Did you call the Devil last night? ABIGAIL: I never called him! Tituba called him! PARRIS: She called the Devil!

Explanation Hale asks Abigail why there was a frog in the soup and how it got there.Abigails story begins to fall apart and her lies are exposed, she says it was Tituba who conjured the devil thereby taking attention away from Abigail. She says because Tituba is from Barbados she spoke in a different language and made the girls do what they did.

Crucible Examples of Ad Hominem Pg 102 Act 3 PROCTOR: How do you call Heaven! Whore! Whore! DANFORTH: Man! Man, what do you- PROCTOR: You charge-? ABIGAIL: Mr. Danforth, he is lying! PROCTOR: Mark her! Now she’ll suck a scream to stab me with, but- DANFORTH:You will prove this! This will not pass! PROCTOR:I have known her, sir. I have known her. DANFORTH: You-you are a lecher?

Explanation In this scene Abigail says she is being bewitched and John Proctor is the one using Ad Hominem having known she is faking says that Abigail is a whore, thereby distracting the court towards his sin of lechery and focusing on whats real and not lies.

One Last example The Virgin Mary because the church said she was a whore and people looked down upon her because a higher authority said it was so even though historical documents clearly show she wasnt
