 All units are base 10!  1000 milligrams = 1 gram  100 centimeters = 1 meter  1000 g = 1 kilogram  1000 m = 1 kilometer  This means when you do conversions you only have to know how to move decimals!

Significant figures (sig figs)- digits that we know for sure plus one estimated digit.

 Read the # right of screen  Shows a Mass of g. The this has 4 sig figs.  If the mass read 3.24 g than it would be 3 s.f.

 You must estimate one extra digit than you know for sure.  Top ruler shows 1 decimal so you estimate a 2 nd. (3 sig figs here)  Bottom Ruler shows none so you estimate 1. (2 sig figs here)

 Graduated cylinder Marking every mL. Record volumes with 1 decimal place. Ex: What is this volume?

No decimal: Everything EXCEPT 0’s at the end (4100  2 sig. fig.’s) Decimal: Everything EXCEPT 0’s at the beginning (  2 sig. fig.’s) (1000.  4 sig. fig.’s) (  5 sig. fig.’s)

If the number is in Scientific notation: Everything before the x 10 something (1.540 x  4 sig. fig.’s) (1.2 x  2 sig. fig.’s)

Count the sig. fig.’s: x

 Split up and go into the lab and make the required measurements. Use the correct # of sig figs.  Don’t put anything heavier than a beaker on the small scale.  Check your results with me.  Share your results with your group.
