Unit Portfolio Presentation Bridget Bridges

Measurement tasks are extended to more precise measures, and standard measures for capacity and mass are introduced and used. The focus at this grade level is on gaining a strong feeling for selecting tools and using them to measure length, mass, and capacity. Some conversions are made within the same system. Area of rectangular regions is introduced. Celsius/Fahrenheit temperatures and their estimation are also added.

Essential Question How do you measure? Unit Questions What do we need to measure things? Why do we need to measure things? Content Questions 1. How do you measure with a ruler? 2. Can you estimate length to the nearest unit? 3. What’s the best until used to measure each item? 4. Can you find the perimeter? 5. How do you use a balance?

This project will help my students develop 21 st century skills by: Collaborating with peers. Analyzing data about measuring and using various tools to answer Unit Questions Solving problems and making decisions about their experiment. Communicating with others in journals.

Purpose of the Assessment To gather information about what students already know and what they wonder about measurement. What I want to learn from my students? I want to find out what they already know about the Unit Questions. How I have tried to promote higher-order thinking? I ask students to find relationships and draw conclusions about making measurements. How the assessment information helps me and my students plan for upcoming activities in the unit? If students have misconceptions about how to measure and what tools to use, I can provide scaffolds. If students have different levels of understanding about measurement, I can provide various resources. We will revisit this assessment throughout the unit for students to add their knowledge. What feedback or additional ideas I’d like? I would like help on my assessment. I think I need to elicit more higher- order thinking, but I’m not sure how.
