Foundations of Professional Psychology Seminar 3 Instructor: Dr. Bina Roginsky

Four steps of the scientific method Observation and description of a phenomenon Formulation of an hypothesis to explain the phenomena Use of the hypothesis to predict the results of new observations Performance of experimental tests of the predictions by several independent experimenters and properly performed experiments.

What is pseudoscience? Pseudoscience begins with a hypothesis—usually one which is appealing emotionally, and spectacularly implausible—and then looks only for items which appear to support it. Pseudoscience relies heavily on subjective validation. Pseudoscience argues from alleged exceptions, errors, anomalies, strange events, and suspect claims—rather than from well-established regularities of nature. Pseudoscientific "explanations" tend to be by scenario.

So what are the key differences? Are there any theories that come to mind as being pseudoscientific? Why might these theories continue to receive support? How can you avoid pseudoscience in your research/writing?

What are key elements to look out for when thinking about theories? Parsimony Operationality Generativity Power Falsifiability Consistency Support Measurement

Let’s practice on these Big bang theory Darwin’s theory of evolution Freud’s psychodynamic theory Please be sure to be respectful of others’ opinions, and make judgments based on the criteria we discussed

What do you think? What are the hardest things about evaluating science? Do you think psychological theories might be harder to evaluate? Why or why not? Do you have any tips or tricks to share with your classmates?
