TYPOGRAPHY COLLAGE What is Typography? = the arrangement, style, appearance, and printing of typefaces. Serif = with feet Sans Serif = without feet

Fonts…they can covey messages too! Website Font Search:

Which font do you think best describes anger? Why?

How do you create an interesting composition? What are some traffic signals artists use to direct the viewers eye down a path? What if it is just black & white? The eye typically goes to the: Lightest area, biggest area, center

What path does your eye follow?

MOVEMENT Placing objects in a composition to provide a visual path for the viewers eyes to travel across the surface Tools to lead the eye: color, rhythm, sequence, contrast, line

What movement can you see?

Type of Space: Positive Space: Space taken up by objects that the artist wants the viewer to see. Negative Space: Space that is around the objects or the leftover, empty space.

What shape do you see in the negative space? The positive spaces GREEN CIRCLES! The negative spaces create a Black CUBE

Where is the positive space in this three- dimensional sculpture?

Notice that positive space cannot be defined if it were not for negative space!

The one on the bottom Which one is positive here if they used black paper to create this piece of art?

The negative space Which space is colored in?

CONTRAST: = a large difference between two things UNITY: = everything fits together as a whole; harmony

REPETITION: = repeating an element over and over RHYTHM: = repetition of shapes, colors, lines, values

VARIETY = differences in artwork; diversity How do you create variety in text? Change : -Font style -Size big/small -Thick / thin -direction / angle

COLLAGE An artistic composition created by gluing various materials/images together

Your Problem: To use text in a way that it loses its identity as words - but instead it displays rhythm, movement, and contrast. To learn to lead the eye across an image with a strong composition.
