Agriculture and Transportation Foundations of Technology Agriculture and Transportation © 2013 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association STEM  Center for Teaching and Learning™ Foundations of Technology Teacher Resource – Unit 3 Lesson 5

The BIG Idea Big Idea: Transportation plays a vital role in the operation of agricultural industries, which include a combination of businesses that use a wide array of products and systems to produce, process, and distribute food, fiber, fuel, chemical, and other useful products. © 2013 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association STEM  Center for Teaching and Learning™ Foundations of Technology

Agriculture Agriculture includes a combination of businesses that use a wide array of products and systems to produce, process, and distribute food, fiber, fuel, chemicals, and other useful products. © 2013 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association STEM  Center for Teaching and Learning™ Foundations of Technology

Agriculture Similar to manufacturing, there are companies and farmers specializing in primary harvesting (taking the natural element from the earth) and other companies and farmers specializing in transforming the natural elements into products for consumers and/or other manufacturers. © 2013 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association STEM  Center for Teaching and Learning™ Foundations of Technology

Transportation and Agriculture Transportation plays a vital role in the operation of other technologies, such as manufacturing, construction, communication, health and safety, and agriculture. Transportation systems include intermodal means of transportation, which means air, water, land, and space vehicles. In the case of agriculture, land is the most common mode of transportation. © 2013 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association STEM  Center for Teaching and Learning™ Foundations of Technology

Transportation and Agriculture Without transportation technologies, agriculture products would not be able to move from the field to your plate. Examples of transportation in agriculture: Grain elevators Combines Conveyors © 2013 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association STEM  Center for Teaching and Learning™ Foundations of Technology

Transportation and Agriculture A grain elevator is a transportation system designed to move harvested grain into silos or storage bins and may or may not include stations for drying and cleaning of the grain prior to storage. © 2013 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association STEM  Center for Teaching and Learning™ Foundations of Technology Grain is transported to the elevator – typically arrives on truck, railcar, or barge. A “tripper” diverts grain off the belt and into the desired bin – can include conveyors (traditional or screw conveyors), direct spouting, and augers. Grain is cleaned, dried, and stored.

Transportation and Agriculture A combine is a transportation system used to harvest grain or other crops. © 2013 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association STEM  Center for Teaching and Learning™ Foundations of Technology The combine cuts the crop. The crop is directed to a rotating chamber with a series of “beaters.” The crop is dislodged and falls to the bottom; the debris falls out the rear of the vehicle.

Transportation and Agriculture Conveyors are used in a variety of industries, but are specifically used in agriculture to move products in and out of storage facilities. A conveyor belt contains two or more pulleys, with a continuous loop of material—the belt—that rotates about them. One or both of the pulleys are powered, called the drive pulley, while the unpowered pulley is called the idler. © 2013 International Technology and Engineering Educators Association STEM  Center for Teaching and Learning™ Foundations of Technology
