2 File management The most important concept for you to understand is file management. You need to know how to: Start a program Open an existing file Create a new file Save a file Save as a file Close the file Exit the program A program is the software, a file or document is the data.

3 Start vs. Exit Start a program by clicking the Start menu and finding the program you want to run.

4 Exit the program by clicking the red X. Start vs. Exit (con’t) Exit the program by clicking the red X.

5 Open a file that already exists. Save a new file or a file that you have made changes to. Open vs. Save

6 Open a file when… You are looking for a file you already typed. You have already saved the file.

7 1. It is very important to first select this pull down arrow when opening a file. 2. Next select your removable disk which is your flash drive 3. The last step is to select the file you want to open and click open Opening a file has 3 steps

8 Save or “Save As” a file when… You have finished typing and you want to put the file away. You have made several changes and don’t want to loose them.

10 “Save” or “Save AS” Have you already saved the file? Do you want to rename the file? Do you want to change the location of the file? Do you want another copy of the file? YES NO YES Use “Save As” YES NO Use “Save”

11 Move vs. Copy You can move or copy:  Text (words, sentences, paragraphs)  Pictures  Songs, movies  Files  Folders Moving text erases the original Copying text makes a duplicate

12 1 Highlight the text you want to move. 2 Choose cut: 1.Click Edit 2.Click Cut 3 Click where you want to put the text. 4 Choose paste: 1.Click Edit 2.Click Paste Moving is a 4 step process Don’t panic: The text will disappear. This step is the most forgotten Text will reappear at the insertion point

13 1 Highlight the text you want to copy. 2 Choose copy: 1.Click Edit 2.Click Copy 3 Click where you want to put the text. 4 Choose paste: 1.Click Edit 2.Click Paste Copying text is a 4 step process This puts the text onto the clipboard This step is the most forgotten A duplicate of the text will appear
