S. Trika Intel® R&D Sep. 6, 2002 Slide 2 of 10 XMSF Strategic Symposium *Other names and brands may be the property of others. The XMSF Challenge XMSF –Getting the data modeled, simulated, synchronized, and visualized –On the Web Compression, streaming, multi-res Network bandwidth, latency and QOS Open standards, heterogeneous clients, scalability –Extensibility diverse apps, diverse feature requirements

S. Trika Intel® R&D Sep. 6, 2002 Slide 3 of 10 XMSF Strategic Symposium *Other names and brands may be the property of others. Performance Scalability Consistent Playback Synchronized sims Efficient, reliable networking Inter/intrane t Models Behaviors/sims Tools Existing scenarios Focus issue: Getting Web-friendly data XMSF ModelsSims Content / Scenario

S. Trika Intel® R&D Sep. 6, 2002 Slide 4 of 10 XMSF Strategic Symposium *Other names and brands may be the property of others. The Authoring Challenge “Easy" integration of 3D Models and Simulations for presentation/collaboration on the Web –Readily available indexed 3D Models –Readily available simulation behaviors –Tools for Modeling, Sims, and M+S Inexpensive, low learning curve, high productivity and flexibility –Wysiwig Consistent playback Quick feedback to the content developer –Support for legacy models/sims (converters, or backwards compatibility)

S. Trika Intel® R&D Sep. 6, 2002 Slide 5 of 10 XMSF Strategic Symposium *Other names and brands may be the property of others. 3D Models for the Web Model availability: –Numerous “standard” formats VRML/X3D *, IGES *, STEP *, DXF *, HOOPS *, OBJ *, W3D *, … –Repositories and search engines 3dcafe.com *, TurboSquid *, Deep Exploration *, … –Format converters E.g., Deep Exploration, PolyTrans *, importers, exporters, … Modeling tools: numerous CAD and DCC tools Web players: –Xj3D *, OpenWorlds *, Shockwave3D *, MetaStream *, …

S. Trika Intel® R&D Sep. 6, 2002 Slide 6 of 10 XMSF Strategic Symposium *Other names and brands may be the property of others. So where is the Web3D content? Takes seemingly forever to get 3D models on the Web –ProEngineer *  3D Studio Max *  Shockwave3D * : ~3 weeks –A medical lab scene took ~6 months to convert to X3D. Problems: –The formats are not quite complete, and lack broad acceptance VRML * : player size, performance DXF * : textures, compression, lighting, materials W3D *, HOOPS * : community extensibility X3D * : compression, streaming, multi-res –No Wysiwig Converters and players are buggy Lack of conformance (“certifications”) Time $$$  “Stuck” in CAD and DCC tools 

S. Trika Intel® R&D Sep. 6, 2002 Slide 10 of 10 XMSF Strategic Symposium *Other names and brands may be the property of others. Summary Cost of Authoring is a key issue –CAD and DCC data is not web-friendly –Formats are incomplete, not wysiwig CAD3D WG formed with complimentary goals XMSF will need importers, exporters, tools –For Models –For Sims –For Scenarios
