Chapter 19 Other Applications of Security at Work

Other Areas for Security Measures  Parking lots and garages.  Courtrooms across the country.  Instances involving VIPs, corporate executives and political candidates.  Businesses located abroad.

Parking Lot and Garage Security  Problems:  Assault.  Robbery.  Theft.  Kidnapping.  Vandalism.  Solutions:  Adequate lighting.  Surveillance via closed circuit TV (CCTV) cameras or patrol.  Communications such as intercoms, phones or call buttons.  Patron awareness programs.

Courtroom Security Problems  Threats, including bomb threats.  Assaults.  Unruly spectators.  Escape attempts.  Demonstrations outside the courtroom.

Solutions for Courtroom Security  Effective access control, including screening of people and packages using metal detectors and x-ray machines.  Surveillance equipment.  Security glass in vulnerable areas.  Locks on doors.  Duress alarms.  A plan on how to react in emergencies such as a duress alarm, an escape or a bomb threat.

Protecting VIPs, Corporate Executives and Political Candidates  Problems:  The principal’s mobility and lack of concern.  The potential for threats, assaults, blackmail, harassment or kidnapping.  Solutions:  Heightening principal’s awareness of risk.  Watching for preincident indicators.  Checking out choke points.  Using advance work prior to any travel.  Avoiding routines.

Protecting Individuals and Business Interests Abroad  Primary problem: Unfamiliarity with the language, local customs and expectations.  Solutions:  Follow same procedures used in a hostile surrounding in the US.  Use procedures for personal protection.  The more that is known of the language, culture and political atmosphere, the greater the likelihood that the security plan will be effective.
