JRN 302: Introduction to Graphics and Visual Communication - 3d models, 3d printing Thursday, 12/10/15

Class Objectives Lecture 3d printing Exam 2 Review Homework assignment Study for Exam 2/final exam

What are 3d models? VECTOR objects that show width, depth, and height Look at software interface (4 screens) Who designs Engineers Computer Graphics/Animators/Ga mers Architects

Once designed, where do 3d models go? To a screen Movies, games Web sites Other softwares (maybe to 2d) If you Google “free 3d models”, you will find MANY free 3d models online… but they probably are NOT created to be built in the real world!

Once designed, where do 3d models go? To be built by machines Injection molding Routers/CNC 3d printers

3d printing Think of it as repeated 2d printing over & over 2 year old video showing Makerbot Replicator 2 with a PLA plastic (~5 min) 1 year old video showing 3d printing food mentions NASA involvement (~5 min) 2 year old video showing bioprinting of human stem cells (~3 min)

What materials/filaments are used in 3d printers Most commonly used is Plastic (either made from cornstarch or not/lego type) Others include Wood Glass-like Food (chocolate, pancake batter, sugar) Metals Conductive (to used in circuit boards) Materials that change with heat Human cells (stem/cartilage, liver, skin) Nano-sized resins

3d printing- why are you hearing about it now Prices of 3d printers are affordable ($500-$3000) Will change some parts of manufacturing process Customized products you can make or finish customizing at home Customized products /very costly to currently print (children’s medical/prosthetics devices) Products that will be “printed” when they arrive at your door (Amazon’s patent, NASA)

3d scanners If you don’t want to build a model, you can create a model by using a 3d scanner 3d scanners costs about $ Kickstarter one for iPhone for $50  bevel-the-49-3d- scanner/?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=3dpi%2Btwitter bevel-the-49-3d- scanner/?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=3dpi%2Btwitter

Why use a 3d Scanner? To preserve what you are scanning Museum pieces: dinosaur bones, art/sculpture evidence (like a gun) A person Scanning POTUS,

Why use a 3d Scanner? To capture an exterior/shell/housing of something Ribcages (to develop an implant) A skull Hands with no fingers Enabling the future Gums Medicare doesn't cover dentures, hearing aids, eye glasses, magazine/volume4-4/digital-dentistry-immediate- dentures.aspxhttp:// magazine/volume4-4/digital-dentistry-immediate- dentures.aspx

3d printing current negatives Still is expensive to do Lots of things to learn about… steep learning curve 3d modeling How to set up a printer and make it work What and where to buy filaments Structural issues because of slicing Not watertight! May not be as strong as injected molded pieces Slowwwww

Why am I introducing you to it? You should be able to understand file conversions (think back to our pyramid) You may work for a company that uses a 3d printer Fashion accessories, drones, tools, medical, anything that manufactures anything, pharmaceutical, housing… Building a 3d printed building

Why am I introducing you to it? You may buy one for yourself and make things You may use one in the lab in Whiteman Have to pay for this It will help set you apart from other people interviewing for a job

Resources i.materilise.com buy objects/sells your 3d models (popular is jewelry) forums freely downloadable 3d models (you print out) Forums NIH Medical database of 3d models,

Bio printing = mind blowing! As of now (2015) Can print liver and kidney cells used to test drugs (Organovo) Can print stents, products that go into a person Can print “bridges” Can print “engineered” organs ng?language=en Goal is to print complex organs to be surgically implanted into you Goal is to print ON YOU during surgery
