COMPETENCIES FOR DATA LIBRARIANSHIP

What? Data Librarian Competencies are the essential knowledge, skills, abilities, and qualities that are required of data librarians in academic libraries today.

Why? Provide common language for the knowledge, skills, abilities and qualities that are potentially required of data librarians. Help identify priorities for training and opportunities for new areas to cover. Provide balanced training across levels of service, size of institution and requirements of individual jobs. Help individuals to create personal development plans and goals in a more formal fashion. Help data librarians to articulate and communicate the value of DLI training to their institutions in a more formal way.

More Advantages Provide a framework for conversations with library and academic leaders regarding levels of service, staffing and professional development needs. Assist those new to the DLI or new to data librarianship with a framework for learning in the field and to help track progress over time. Assist with planning DLI orientation for new contacts.

Our Goal With your help, we would like to create a list of competencies based on different types of data library service. ◦ Pass-through data service ◦ Mid-level data service ◦ Stand-alone data service ◦ Instructive….not exhaustive!

What we are NOT doing… It is NOT a to-do list for every data librarian (that is, a data librarian will not need to possess every single competency on the list) It is NOT meant to define what type of service a particular institution or individual offers. It is NOT a yardstick to measure anyone’s relative contribution or level of knowledge.

Group Instructions Form groups based on type of service Review list of competencies from survey ◦ Which are relevant to you? ADD competencies that are not listed EXPAND upon competencies from the list Record and report back….

Group Leaders Pass-through data service (where DLI contacts wear many hats data is only a minor part of their duties) ◦ Group leader: Tom Power Mid-level data service (where DLI contacts have data as an important part, but not the only part of their data service) ◦ Group leader: Barb Znamirowski Stand-alone data service (where at least one individual is devoted to the data service for 100% of the time) ◦ Group leader: Jane Fry
