Family members:Glum & Tum Imposters:Sum & Crum

GlumTum 1.5 times as wide4 times as wide 1.5 times as tall4 times as tall 1.5 times the perimeter 4 times the perimeter 2.25 times the area 1.5 x 1.5 = times the area 4 x 4 = 16 Angle measures are the same!

SumCrum 3 times as wide2 times as wide 2 times as long1 time as tall (same!) Mouth is 12 units wide and 2 units high Mouth is 2 times longer than Mug and the same height as Mug Nose is 6 units wide and 2 units high Nose is 2 times longer than Mug and the same height as Mug

Yes, the findings support the prediction that the impostors will be Sum and Crum! Impostors are those who have different scale factors applied to the x and y coordinates. In other words…rules that the x & y are multiplied by the same number make family members!

 Can you describe to your neighbor what scale factor means?  the # you multiply the lengths of an original figure by to stretch or shrink it  What might be some examples in the real world where scale factors might be used?  Movie screens, logos, billboards, blue prints, photographs, copied images, clip art …

Make sure your notebook cover sheet looks like this:  #. Date Brief Description  S&S Problem 2.1 day 1/ ACE (1 a-e)  S&S Problem 2.1 day 2/ ACE (14-15) You Need: Calculator 2.1 Lab sheet from 2.1 Grid Sheet yesterday BIG IDEA: Drawing and Identifying Similar Figures

 How would you describe to a friend the growth of the figures that you drew?  They all increased in size…taller…or wider…or both!  Which members seem to belong to the Wump family? And which do NOT?  Mug, Zug and Bug have the same shape but Lug and Glug are distorted.

 NO!  Lug is WIDE and SHORT  Glug is NARROW and TALL

 Family members (Mug, Zug, and Bug) have the SAME angle measures!  The others (Lug and Glug) do NOT have the same angle measures…EXCEPT for the right angles, of course!!

► leg heights  1, 2, 3 ► nose widths  2, 4, 6 ► mouth widths  4, 8, 12 Did you notice any patterns?
