Presentation transcript:

Coverage ~ Quick Study Curriculum ~ Designing for Inclusive Coverage Designing for Coverage The yearbook is not just for 8 th graders; the yearbook is for everyone! Everything you need to know to design a book that has something for everyone.

Coverage ~ Quick Study Curriculum ~ Designing for Inclusive Coverage Defining INCLUSIVE COVERAGE What is INCLUSIVE coverage? – Reporting the story of the entire year for all students, staff, and community. Each student should appear in your book at least 3 times. – Get everyone in the book at least 3 times – Have something for everyone – Emphasize memories – Include all important facts

Coverage ~ Quick Study Curriculum ~ Designing for Inclusive Coverage DESIGN for Inclusive Coverage Plan spreads, stories and content modules in each section which feature different social groups and personalities. Devote pages to school sports, rallies, popular classes and clubs, as well as student jobs, unique traditions, summer travel, artists, extreme sports, fashion, etc. Brainstorm how to include the voices and images of students who are not directly involved in the activity.

Coverage ~ Quick Study Curriculum ~ Designing for Inclusive Coverage Get each reader in the book at least 3 times in photos – once as a PERSON, two other times as a PERSONALITY. Traditional portraits (school pics) show the PERSON… Candids and photos of the students “in action,”-- with friends, in classes, on teams, with clubs – show PERSONALITY. Covered 3X!

Coverage ~ Quick Study Curriculum ~ Designing for Inclusive Coverage Design spreads which make room for – More photo boxes – Photo strips – Folio faces – Specialty coverage – Creative portraits – Photos in scoreboards – Photos in informational graphics Make the most of each page!

Coverage ~ Quick Study Curriculum ~ Designing for Inclusive Coverage Try to fit a minimum of 20 photos in each spread. Get More Photos!

Coverage ~ Quick Study Curriculum ~ Designing for Inclusive Coverage 20+ photos per spread: You Can Do It!!

Coverage ~ Quick Study Curriculum ~ Designing for Inclusive Coverage Add coverage to any spread with photo strips at the top or bottom of the page. Photo strips may include room for captions, simple id’s or candids (no caption). Add a photo strip to increase coverage Photo Strips

Coverage ~ Quick Study Curriculum ~ Designing for Inclusive Coverage Photo strips needn’t be blocky or boring, as the one above proves using circular pics and a ribbon graphic. Cut-Out backgrounds (COB’s) may allow room for more students in a photo strip. Photo Strips come in all different shapes and sizes

Coverage ~ Quick Study Curriculum ~ Designing for Inclusive Coverage Photo strips may include full captions or just quick id’s Design with photo strips and folio faces Folios should be on every spread and have a consistent look. If you design yours with small photo boxes you ensure more students are covered on every page. Folio Faces & Photo Strips

Coverage ~ Quick Study Curriculum ~ Designing for Inclusive Coverage Folio Faces Folio’s that state the page number, book section and spread title should run consistently throughout your book; since they are on every page, adding mini-pics (with or without id captions) is a great way to add coverage to each spread.

Coverage ~ Quick Study Curriculum ~ Designing for Inclusive Coverage Specialty Coverage Specialty Coverage provides a great place to feature students who are less involved in traditional school activities. Specialty coverage doesn’t have to take up an entire spread like the mission trip shown here does; it is also perfect for a creative side- bar built into your portraits section or index.

Coverage ~ Quick Study Curriculum ~ Designing for Inclusive Coverage Division pages may provide extra space for Specialty Coverage… This spring divider is the perfect place for a profile on the special skill of a student who might be underrepresented in the rest of the book. People Profiles are a great way to get to know your quieter students.

Coverage ~ Quick Study Curriculum ~ Designing for Inclusive Coverage …Or you might use all that space on Division pages to pack in a million candids!

Coverage ~ Quick Study Curriculum ~ Designing for Inclusive Coverage Cover students as PERSONALITIES, as well as, as PERSONS School picture sections should be designed to accommodate specialty coverage modules or extra candids. Specialty Coverage

Coverage ~ Quick Study Curriculum ~ Designing for Inclusive Coverage Creative Portrait Sections: design for more than “mug shots.”

Coverage ~ Quick Study Curriculum ~ Designing for Inclusive Coverage Creative Portrait Pages: more than just faces Creative Portrait Sections

Coverage ~ Quick Study Curriculum ~ Designing for Inclusive Coverage Adding pics to your info graphics is as easy as 1,2,3… 1)faces with stats on the bar graph, 2) pics of students with their quotes, 3) people profiles with “personality” pics On informational graphics, Don’t just tell; SHOW! Photos in Info Graphics

Coverage ~ Quick Study Curriculum ~ Designing for Inclusive Coverage 10 quotes with photos in this information graphic Don’t just tell; SHOW! Photos in Info Graphics

Coverage ~ Quick Study Curriculum ~ Designing for Inclusive Coverage 20+ photos per spread: You Can Do It!!

Coverage ~ Quick Study Curriculum ~ Designing for Inclusive Coverage Even though this spread features a large dominant photo, it doesn’t sacrifice coverage because of the creative use of photos in the font. 25 pics altogether! Get Creative! Just GET 20+ per spread! Get More Photos!
