Overhaul 4 OVERHAUL Procedures Begin the process as soon as possible Search and extinguish in areas of involvement Be observant to possible evidence of fire cause Continue search until the fire is out Remove debris and restore premises
Overhaul 5 DETECTING HIDDEN FIRES Sight Discolored materials Peeling paint Smoke emission from cracks Cracked plaster Dried wallpaper Touch Feel walls or floors with the back of your hand Sound Popping or cracking Hissing steam Electronic sensors Detect heat variances in objects that may be in hidden locations through thermal imaging
Overhaul 6 OPENING CONCEALED SPACES Walls Use pick-head axe or other suitable tool Select the place to make the opening avoiding electrical outlets and switches and plumbing Locate studs by sounding Use chopping strokes to cut the wall coverings along the studs Use pick of ax to remove wall covering
Overhaul 7 Use pike poles or ceiling hook Stand between the work area and the exit making sure not to stand directly under the area to be opened Use pike pole/ceiling hook Push pole/hook through ceiling with hook pointed away Pull down and away OPENING CONCEALED SPACES Ceilings
Overhaul 8 Use pry tool to remove trim Check between casing and framing OPENING CONCEALED SPACES Doors & Windows
Overhaul 9 Use pick-head axe to remove floor covering Use cutting tool to cut along floor joist Use pick to pull material away OPENING CONCEALED SPACES Floors
Overhaul 10 SECURING THE FIRE SCENE Fire department maintains control as long as reasonably necessary Secure premises until investigator has gathered all evidence Firefighter’s duties if assigned to security Watch for rekindle Keep everyone out unless accompanied by a department official Keep a log of all who enter
