Announcements Week 2 Vocabulary Quiz on 9/15. Use the Quizlet website (http://quizlet.com /mscaseyCHISD/fo lders) to help you study.

Homework Using Week 2 vocabulary words, write a total of 5 complete sentences (1 sentence per vocabulary word). This assignment is due tomorrow (9/11) I will provide example sentences to show you how to use these words. DO NOT COPY MY EXAMPLE SENTENCES.

Homework Examples When the conflagration was extinguished, all that remained was the wooden frame of a house. Students that choose to be obstinate are more likely to encounter disciplinary consequences. The blizzard precluded the citizens from driving their vehicles. While watching HGTV, I witnessed a landscaper use a trowel, to begin digging holes to plant bushes. Ludwig van Beethoven, can be considered a virtuoso of the piano.

Homework Examples (Pre-AP) The sneaky car salesman tried to finagle his clients out of lots of money. Stephanie, a fastidious student, wanted to make sure that all of her school work was absolutely perfect. The mall is an example of a place where a cacophony of sounds are present. When posting to Twitter, brevity is always encouraged. You only have 140 characters per post! Tim never completes his work, so calling his latest promotion an earned one is something of a misnomer.

Objective SWBAT explain complex inferences.

Notes We make inferences every single day. Example: If you come home from school and your dog licks you, you can infer that your dog missed you and is happy to see you.

Inferences We make INFERENCES when we use EVIDENCE and our own EXPERIENCE to draw a CONCLUSION. Evidence + Smart Thinking=Inference When you make an inference, your sentence should start with, “I can infer that…”

How to Make Inferences 1. Ask, "What am I trying to figure out", by reading the questions. 2. Read the text and make a connection to what you know. 3. Use the evidence (clues) from the text and your own experience to make your inference. 4. Choose the best answer from the multiple choice. (If applicable)

Practice 1 Based on this picture, what can you infer? Be prepared to defend your answer. Remember: Evidence + Smart Thinking=Inference

Practice 2 Based on this picture, what can you infer? Be prepared to defend your answer. Remember: Evidence + Smart Thinking=Inference

Practice 3 Michael loves to play baseball. He spends his weekends on the field or training with his coach. He went to baseball camp and received special instruction from a professional pitcher. He lives, sleeps, and eats baseball!   Which of these sentences is probably true?   A. Michael is not a hard worker.   B. Basketball is very important to Michael.   C. Michael's parents do not support his goals.   D. Michael wants to be a professional baseball player.

Practice 4 Maria was walking home from school. When she reached the corner, she noticed something on the ground under the bush. She looked more closely and saw a purse. She looked inside to see if there was a name or address. She noticed a very large amount of money. Maria quickly closed the purse and took it to the grocery store near the corner. She gave the purse to the grocer who promised to call the owner. What can you infer about Maria? A. Maria didn't need the money. B. Maria cannot be trusted. C. Maria is an honest person. D. Maria usually rides the bus home.

“Choices Made” by Jim O-Loughlin Later, he would be able to consider all that he had left behind and never saw again: the wedding album, the birth certificates, the kids’ favorite toys, even the laptop. In the moment though, with the storm surging and blow back peeling off the roof like masking tape, he only had time to grab what he could on the way out. Share your reactions. What’s going on? Why didn’t the character take those items?

Still, even as he ran to the car, dripping sweat and bleeding from the gash in his forehead, with the river already up to the wheel wells, he realized that the choices he had just made said something about who he was.  In his arms, he held a phone book, the cantaloupe that had just turned ripe, and a gallon of milk.  And he had made sure to lock the front door.   Share your reactions.  This time discuss what the character DID take with him.  What can you infer? Defend your answer. What might these items tell you about the man?  How are these items similar or different from your own?

Independent Practice Rewrite this in a way that would tell a reader something about your best friend.    Still, even as he ran to the _________,  ________ing and _________ing from the  ______ in his ________, he realized that the  choices he had just made said something about  who he was.  In his arms, he held a ________,  the ___________ that _________, and  _________.  And he had made sure to  _________________.

Independent Practice (cont.) Based on the way your partner filled in the blanks to the previous paragraph, what can you infer? Be prepared to defend your answer! Evidence + Smart Thinking=Inference
