StopPreviousNext 6 What is radio on the Internet? You can listen to the radio on a computer connected to the Internet. You can listen to live radio that is playing on the radio now. Sometimes you will want to listen to a radio program that was played earlier. You can do this by listening to a podcast.

StopPreviousNext 7 Equipment To listen to radio on the Internet you will need the following:  A computer connected to the Internet  Speakers or headphones  A media player (software) on the computer. Windows Media Player or RealPlayer are 2 examples of free software that you can use. Your trainer will make sure you have the media player on your computer. If you need to set up the media player, page 28 will show you how.

StopPreviousNext BBC World Service This is an example of a radio station you can listen to online – BBC World Service radio. Have a go Move the mouse over the address bar. Do 1 click. You will see the current website address surrounded with blue. The mouse shape will change to the I beam. Type in the web address: 6.Press the Enter key on the computer’s keyboard. You will see the BBC World Service Languages website with a list of languages and a map of the world. 8

StopPreviousNext Have a go Choose a language. Move the mouse over the language. The mouse shape will change to the hand shape. Do 1 click. You will see a box on the map of the world Move your mouse over the box. When you see the mouse arrow change to a hand. Do 1 click. You will see the web page in your language. 9

StopPreviousNext 10 Listen to the radio You can read news stories in this language or you can listen to the radio. Have a go To listen to the radio move the mouse over an audio icon. The mouse shape will change to the hand shape. Do 1 click. Different websites use different audio icons. You may see a picture of a speaker radio tower microphone radio headphones music note

StopPreviousNext 11 Media players You will see one of these media players. Your trainer will have set up the media player for you earlier. If you need more help to do this go to page 28. This is Windows Media Player. This is Real Player. You are now connected to the radio using the computer. The radio program will start to play.

StopPreviousNext 12 Change the sound volume Read this There are two ways to change the sound volume of the radio. You can use the volume control on the media player. You can also use the volume control at the bottom of the computer screen on the taskbar. When you are listening to internet radio in a public place, remember to use headphones so you do not disturb other people.

StopPreviousNext 13 Change the volume using the media player Read this You can make the sound louder or quieter using the slide button on the media player. This is the slide button on Windows Media Player. This is the slide button on Real Player.

StopPreviousNext Have a go Move your mouse over the slide button. The mouse shape will stay as an arrow. Do 1 click and hold the mouse button down. Move your mouse to the left to decrease the sound. Move your mouse to the right to increase the sound. Let go of your mouse button. 14

StopPreviousNext Change the volume using the taskbar Have a go 1.The taskbar is at the bottom of the computer screen. Move your mouse over the speaker on the taskbar. This is the volume control. If you do not see the speaker: Move your mouse over the arrow. The mouse shape will stay as an arrow. Do 1 click. Move your mouse over the speaker. The mouse shape will stay as an arrow. Do 1 click. You will see the speaker. 15

StopPreviousNext Do 1 click on the speaker. Move your mouse over the slide button. Do 1 click on the slide button and hold the mouse button down. Move the mouse away from you to increase the sound. or Move the mouse towards you to decrease the sound. Let go of the mouse button. 16

StopPreviousNext Turn the radio off Remember to turn the radio off when you have finished listening. Have a go Move the mouse over the close tool. Do 1 click. The media player will close but the website will stay open. 17

StopPreviousNext 3ZZZ Melbourne Ethnic Community Radio 3ZZZ is a Victorian radio station. Have a go Move the mouse over the address bar. You will see the current website address surrounded with blue. Do 1 click. Type in the web address: Press the Enter key on the keyboard. You will see the 3ZZ Melbourne Ethnic Community Radio website. 18

StopPreviousNext Find a radio program Have a go Move your mouse over the down arrow next to Select a show. The mouse shape will stay as an arrow. Do 1 click. You will see a list of languages and programs you can listen to. 19

StopPreviousNext Listen to a radio program Have a go Pick the language and program you want to listen to. Move your mouse over the program. The mouse shape will stay as an arrow. Do 1 click. Move your mouse over the Listen box. The mouse shape will change to the hand shape. Do 1 click. 20

StopPreviousNext You will see a box. Move your mouse over Open. The mouse shape will change to the hand shape. Do 1 click. You will see a box with the radio program being downloaded (copied) to your computer. This may happen very quickly. The media player will open and the radio program will start to play. 21

StopPreviousNext SBS Radio You can listen to radio in many languages on the SBS website Have a go Move the mouse over the address bar. Do 1 click. You will see the current website address surrounded with blue. Type in the web address Press the Enter key on the keyboard. You will see the SBS Radio website. 22

StopPreviousNext Choose a language and program Have a go Move the mouse over the down arrow next to Choose a language. The mouse shape will stay as an arrow. Do 1 click. Move the mouse over the language of your choice. The mouse shape will stay as an arrow. Do 1 click. Move the mouse over Go. The mouse shape will change to the hand shape. Do 1 click. You will see a web page in your language. 23

StopPreviousNext Listen to a program Have a go 1.Move your mouse over one of the audio icons or Option 1 2.Do 1 click on the audio icon The media player window will open and the radio will start to play. StopPreviousNext World radio You can listen to radio from around the world in English and your language. To find these radio stations you will search on the Google website. Have a go Move your mouse over the address bar. Do 1 click. You will see the current website address surrounded with blue. Type in the web address Press the Enter key on the computer’s keyboard. You will see the Google website. 25

StopPreviousNext Search for a radio station Have a go Move your mouse over the search box. The mouse shape will change to the I beam shape. Do 1 click. Type in radio and the country or language. Press the Enter key on the keyboard. You will see a list of search results. These are radio stations, or websites listing radio stations. Move your mouse over the website you want to see. The mouse shape will change to the hand shape. Do 1 click. You will see the website. 26

StopPreviousNext Choose a radio station from a list Some websites list many radio stations. e.g. This website lists radio stations in Europe: Have a go Move your mouse over the country. The mouse shape will change to the hand shape. Do 1 click. You will see a list of radio station websites. Move your mouse over the radio station you want to listen to. The mouse shape will change to the hand shape. Do 1 click. You will see the website of the radio station. 27

StopPreviousNext Listen to the radio Have a go Move your mouse over the audio icon that will start the radio. On this website it is a picture of headphones. The mouse shape will change to the hand shape. Do 1 click. You will see the media player and the radio will start to play. Remember: there are many radio stations around the world. Each one may be set up differently. Take your time to look at each website. Work out how they are set up and ask your trainer for help. 28

StopPreviousNext Choose a media player The first time you use the BBC World Service website, you will choose the media player you want to use. Some radio stations have a media player built into their website. The two common media players are Windows Media Player and Real Player Have a go Move your mouse over the media player you want to use. Do 1 click on the round button to make your choice. You will see the media player box. 29
