Where, Oh Where, is My Compass Rose?? Joe Ladwig >>>> >>>>< Lighthouse Christian Academy Bloomington, IN Bloomington, IN

Compass Rose Basics ► Most maps and charts are oriented to North  Either magnetic north, where your compass looks  Or True north, where the North Pole ACTUALLY IS! ► The cardinal headings spell NEWS (sort of)  They are 90  apart ► Inter-Cardinal headings (NE, SE, SW & NW) split the circle into 8 sections and are between the cardinal headings  They “bisect” the cardinal angles 45  )

Compass Rose Basics ► The compass rose counts 0  to 360  through all of the degrees of a circle  N: 000   E: 090   S: 180   W: 270  and …  N: 360  (yep, again.)

Four Points of Compass Anatomy ► The Base  Point the arrow (or long end) away from you for navigation  Provides map reading helpers (parallel lines) for map track alignment ► Rotating Bezel  Provides the “Compass Bearing” readout around its face  Turns the Shed N S E W

Four Points of Compass Anatomy ► Needle  North (el Norte…) is, “the Reddest End” ► Lanyard  Attach it to you securely.  This TOOL is your best friend when tumbling head-over- heels down a hillside N S E W

Let’s Put FRED in the Shed !!! ► Let’s set a course of travel…  Due East ► First ROTATE the Bezel  East should be at the arrow end ► Assume tracking posture  Compass in hand,  Hand against your belly,  Lanyard taught above waist high N S E W

Let’s Put FRED in the Shed !!! ► Rotate yourself and  Put the reddest end of the needle in the shed ► Holding the reddest end of the needle “FRED” in the outlined arrow “the Shed”  Will keep you on an Easterly track indefinitely N S E W

Practice Setting a Track or Two ► Set-up a Westerly (due West) track ► Set-up a Southwesterly (225  ) track ► Set-up a Northeasterly (045  ) track ► Set-up a Southerly (due South) track
