Goal 1 Democracy Magna Carta Republican/Republicanism Separation of Powers Suffrage Common Law Quartering Factions Salutary Neglect Quakers Nationalism Dictatorship Ratification Stamp Act Egalitarianism

Common Law Law that is not written down, but is based on past precedent and customs.

Democracy People having a say in what happens in their government Everyone can pitch in

Dictatorship When the party in charge has no limits and is commanded by a single person

Egalitarianism When everyone is considered equal to one another

Factions A group or bunch of people that believe in the same idea

Magna Carta Basic Rights for the English that King John signed Gave the English people what they wanted

Nationalism Patriotism to ones nation

Quakers A non violent religion that promotes equality of the sexes and does not recognize being different

Quartering To hold in a household

Ratification Getting accepted by all of the states

Republican/Republicanism One who favors a republican form of government. Lowering taxes and limiting government involvement

Salutary Neglect Letting colonist run and govern themselves without any help

Separation of Powers When the government is split up so that each branch can check each other. Makes the Government less powerful

Stamp Act When taxes were raised on almost all paper products

Suffrage The act or right to vote Usually pertains to women getting the right to vote.

Cloture To end or close an argument or debate Stopping of a dispute

Expulsion If a member of congress does something so offensive that he or she is taken off of congress

Filibuster When a person talks about a subject as long as he/she likes to prevent people from voting or to encourage people to vote. Usually a very long procedure

Fines Money that is collected by the government for wrongdoings

Immunity When a member of congress is in session they cannot be arrested besides treason, a felony, or breach of peace

Medicaid Government funded health insurance for people who don’t make much money

Pardons When the president excuses people from jail time from criminal offenses

Preamble The introduction to any type of writing. Found in the beginning of the US Constitution

Precedence When past court decisions are used to make legal rulings based on interpretation

Revenue Money that the government gains

Senate A house composed of two senators per state that serve six year terms

Tariffs Taxes that are put on products that are imported from foreign areas

Treaty A formal agreement between two or more countries

Whip A part of the house that makes the members of a party vote the way the party leaders want them to
