What is it? Megalopolis is the urban corridor that is located along the northeastern coast of the US It is described as an interconnected, interrelated and almost continuous urban area.

History The term megalopolis was coined in 1960 by an urban geographer by the name of Jean Gottmann The term Megalopolis is derived from Greek and means "very large city” In fact the Greeks attempted to create a megalopolis, but it didn’t work, however the small city, named megalopolis is still there currently

Growth The megalopolis has been developing over hundreds of years It began as some of the original 13 colonies, with the exception of the southern colonies (VA, the Carolinas, and GA) Communication between these areas have always been extensive and transportation has always been dense. ▫Knowing what you do from history why is this true?

The scope of this urban sprawl The megalopolis extends from Boston, Massachusetts to Washington DC More than 600 miles long Covers 60,000 square miles

Major cities Boston New york Philadelphia Baltimore Washington DC ▫Just the five of these cities contain 38 million people not including the population from the smaller cities in between these major ones

Economy More than 20% of the country’s entire employment occurs in megalopolis ▫That’s million jobs The proportion of white collar workers is larger than national average Megalopolis has the largest market for goods and services in the country

Politics and policies As this area continues to grow, it has influenced national political and economic policy decisions. ▫why? ▫Some reasons could be  Washington DC is located here (the capital of the US)  High population, which effects how many representatives they receive for the house of representatives

Issues What do you think the major issues megalopolis faces? Unemployment Substance abuse Congestion Homelessness Because of its massive social, political and economical influence it is a prime target for terrorist attacks, as seen on September 11 th.

Other Megalopoli in the US Can you think of other areas that may be an emerging megalopolis in the US. ▫Think of densely populated areas A couple examples are the Great Lakes to Pittsburgh, and the San Francisco Bay area to San Diego

Other Megalopoli around the world What about around the world? One prime example of this would be Tokyo Japan and the surrounding cities, others include many areas around major cities in china and india

Areas considered to be megalopoli
