עולם הסביבונים מצגות קלריטה ואפרים

נ = נִיכּטס = שום דבר (לא זכייה ולא הפסד) ה = האלבּ = חצי (חצי זכייה) היסטוריה מוצאו של הסביבון ככל הנראה בהודו העתיקה. הסביבון מהווה פיתוח של משחק המזל המסמל את גלגל החמה. לסביבון ארבע דפנות, שעל כל אחת מהן מסומנת (מגולפת, חרוטה או צבועה) אות. האותיות מייצגות גורלות העולים במהלך המשחק. ביידיש, האותיות הן: נ = נִיכּטס = שום דבר (לא זכייה ולא הפסד) ג = גוּט = טוב (זכייה) ה = האלבּ = חצי (חצי זכייה) ש = שְלעכט = רע (הפסד) המשחק בסביבון, שנפוץ גם באירופה, (ונקרא בגרמנית "דרעידל" ),אומץ שם על ידי היהודים שכרכו אותו עם מסורת חג החנוכה וניסיו. הם נתנו לאותיות את ראשי התיבות העבריות המוכרים: נס גדול היה שם. בארץ החליפו את ה-ש' באות פ', המייצגת את המילה "פה". במשך הזמן התפתח המנהג של מתן דמי חנוכה לילדים. מעות אלו שימשו להימורים במשחק הסביבון, בדומה למשחקי הימורים באגוזים של פסח.

סביבון חנוכה לסביבון המסורתי יש צורה של קוביה עם חוד מצד אחד, ובצד השני יש מקל קצר. על ארבע הפאות הנותרות של הקוביה, שנמצאות בין המקל לחוד רשומות האותיות נ-ג-ה-פ כל אות בצד אחד, כשהן ראשי תיבות של "נס גדול היה פה" והן מסמלות את הנסים של חנוכה. על סביבונים בחו"ל מופיעות האותיות נ-ג-ה-ש, שפירושן "נס גדול היה שם" (שם – בארץ ישראל). נהוג לשחק בסביבון בחג החנוכה מזה דורות, ובין השאר משתמשים בזה כקובית-חנוכה להימורים על מטבעות שוקולד (ואולי גם כסף אמיתי). המשחק בסביבון הונהג בקרב ילדי קהילות ישראל, כדי שלא יסיחו תינוקות דעתם מן הנס, אף בשעת משחקם.

סביבוני משחק לרוב סביבוני המשחק שלא נועדו דווקא לחנוכה צורת דיסק בעלת סימטריה גלילית, על מנת שהסביבון יסתובב טוב יותר וזמן רב יותר. באמצעות מקל מסובבים את הסביבון על החוד והוא "מרקד" על המשטח סביב עצמו. ישנם גם סביבונים המכונים "פורפרה" בעגת ילדי ישראל, והם מסובבים על ידי כריכת חוט מסביבם ומשיכתו במהירות. לשם כך חרוט תבריג על חלקו התחתון של הסביבון.

Sugoroku Koma - Although not strictly a spinning top in itself, this Japanese randomising device still makes use of a spinning top to achieve its results. It is made up of a stand with a lipped "bowl-shaped" depression at the uppermost part inside which a top with a specially grooved tip is spun. When the top stops spinning, the grooved tip catches on the lip of the stand and instead of falling off, the top will rest sideways.
