PICTURE DAY

REMEMBER YOUR ORQ vs. LONG COMP CHEAT SHEET! First and foremost, the ORQ assesses reading comprehension; in other words, how thoroughly did you read and understand Outliers chapters 1 & 2? You must answer the question asked Length: 1-2 paragraphs Correct answers can be found in the reading or can be inferred from information in the reading. In other words, go back to the reading! Uses quotes with citations! Your comprehension of the text matters more than spelling, grammar, style, etc. – but don’t let spelling and grammatical mistakes interfere with your message! Hints: Your thesis is basically a rewording of the question into statement form. Your thesis is your main idea, and every sentence after your thesis should reinforce that main idea. Only use quotes that back up your thesis! Cite your quotes, and cite your quotes correctly. Quickly summarize with a single concluding sentence. BE CONCISE AND TO THE POINT!

EDITING CHECKLIST OVERALL: A) Do all of your points directly address the assertion you made in your thesis? They should! B) Take a look at the balance between your insight and your evidence (or summary). Your insight should always outweigh your evidence. Your summary should be minimized (or eliminated outright). COMMON GRAMMAR MISTAKES TO LOOK FOR: 1. Homonym/Homophone errors: their/there/they’re, to/too/two, than/then, affect/effect, your/you’re, etc. 2. Run ons – two or more sentences crammed together without the proper punctuation breaks or conjunctions. 3. Fragments – sentences without a complete subject and predicate. 4. Capitalization 5. Transitions 6. Awkward phrasing - ask a friend to read it aloud to see if it makes sense
