She realized that ……..because…………treated like animals. Her kindness. No. other Quaker women and her husband helped her.

Task 3 Learn to think Choose the qualities that you think Elizabeth Fry has and find the sentences to support your idea. intelligent determined generous kind modest unselfish hard-working brave confident considerate patriotic dedicated

Notes on English prisons in the nineteenth century Elizabeth Fry’s suggestions 1.The women were treated like animals. 2.They had no beds, clean clothes, food or heating. 3.The children born in prison had to stay there and had no chance of an education She taught the women to sew, knit and make goods to sell. She provided food, clean clothes and straw for beds. She began a prison school for the children Task 4 Learn to get facts (#1P45)

Task 5 Learn to imagine (#2P46) 1 Elizabeth, why don’t you spend more time with your family? 2 Joseph, why do you let your wife work with prisoners? 3 (To the prisoners) What do you think of Elizabeth’s ideas? 1 There are plenty of people to look after them but these people have only me to care about them. 2 I agree with what my wife does. We should help those who are less fortunate than ourselves. 3 Before she came we had no hope and no chance to change our life. Now we have the possibility of a new start.

1 … it seemed ___ ___ her life would be comfortable and peaceful. 2 One day she ________ to visit a prison. 3 This ______ they would probably have to ____ or _____ when they ______ ___ and then would ______ to prison. 4 Later Elizabeth was asked to go to the leaders of Britain to _______ ____ ____ improve the conditions for prisoners. 5 Her ideas did not ________ after her death and her work _____________ in 1947 when the Quakers ___________ the Nobel Peace Prize. Task 6 Learn useful points as if was asked meant beg steal grew up return discuss how to disappear was remembered were given

Task 7 Verb study When the Quaker, Elizabeth, (marry) Joseph Fry, it (seem) as if her life (be) comfortable and peaceful. But Elizabeth (not) content with her easy life and her (grow) family. She (see) many poor people (live) near her and she (want) to help them. One day she (ask) to visit a prison. At first the prison officers (not) want to let her (visit) the women prisoners because they (fear) the prisoners (attack) her, but Elizabeth (not) afraid. She (realise) that the prisoners (behave) badly because they (treat) like animals. They (have) no beds, clean clothes, food or heating. Any child (bear) in prison (have) to stay there and (have) no chance of an education. This (mean) they (will) probably have to beg or (steal) when they (grow) up and then (return) to prison. So the first thing Elizabeth (do) (be) (provide) food, clean clothes and straw for beds. Later she (begin) a prison school for the children and (teach) the women to sew, knit and (make) goods (sell).

In this way they (be) able to make a little money for themselves and (gain) some self-respect. Her kindness (help) her (gain) the friendship of the prisoners and they (begin) to try (improve) their conditions for themselves. Later Elizabeth (ask) (go) to the leaders of Britain (discuss) how (improve) the conditions for prisoners. Of course she (not) do all the work on her own. Other Quaker women (help) her and (go) around the country (raise) money for her work. Some people (not) like her ideas and (quarrel) with her. They (say) that she (spend) more time with her family. Other people (say) she (enjoy) (be) famous too much. But her husband, Joseph, (support) and (encourage) her, so she (continue) (work) (help) (improve) the lives of poor prisoners till she (die). Her ideas (not) disappear after her death and her work (remember) in 1947 when the Quakers (give) the Nobel Peace Prize.
