Hardness Some minerals are soft while others are hard. ◦ Diamonds are so hard that you can cut steel with them. Hardness is the measure of how difficult it is for a mineral to be scratched. ◦ The hardness of a mineral can help you identify that mineral.

The Mohs Scale The hardest mineral is a 10 and the softest is a 1

Streak Streak is the color of the powder left behind by a mineral when it is rubbed against a rough white tile. The streak can be different than the color of the outside of the mineral.
