Etiquette Etiquette is the code of behavior that guides social situations. For examples, observing proper table manners. In the workplace, etiquette governs: –Gossip –Professionalism –Avoiding comparisons a. Workload b. Salary –Treatment of co-workers –1.) Parking spaces –2.) Vacation periods/schedules –3.) Work schedule –4.) Bonuses

Diversity The term diversity refers to the many factors that make people different. Diversity involves respecting people’s differences. The US is the most diverse country in the world because its population comes from every other nation. Everyone in the US has experienced some form of diversity. Diversity trends in the US. a. Language b. Disability c. Religion d. Gender e. Age

Cultural Heritage Cultural Heritage determines what beliefs, learned behaviors and language pass through the generations to each individual. 5 Largest Ethnic Groups in the US: –Native Americans –European Americans (Spain, England, Germany, France, Holland) –Asian Americans (China, Japan, Korea, Philippine Islands, Indonesia) –African Americans –Hispanic Americans (Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Central and South America)

Employee actions Employee actions that encourage respect for workplace diversity: –Show flexibility. –Examine your assumptions, prejudices and stereotypes. –Explore different cultures. –Show patience in communicating and understanding. –Admit unfamiliarity of diverse customs along with a willingness to learn more about them. –Show respect for ideas different from your own. –Avoid stereotypical jokes/humor. –See the humanity in every person.

Discrimination Discrimination means treating people on a basis other than individual merit. Generally, discrimination refers to the negative treatment of one or more individuals compared to that of the larger group. Basis of discrimination 1.) Sex 2.) Race 3.) Color 4.) National Origin 5.) Language 6.) Religion 7.) Disabilities 8.) Age 9.) Sexual orientation 10.) Appearance

The Law and Discrimination Fair Labor Standards Act –Forbids unfair treatment of employees by employers. Deals with minimum wage, overtime pay and child labor standards. Equal Pay Act –Forbids the practice of using different pay scales for men and women Civil Rights Act –Banned employment discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.. Created the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to enforce all labor laws and regulations.

Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 –Banned unfair treatment of workers age 40+ Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 –Forbids discrimination against US citizens born outside the country. Americans with Disabilities Act 1991 Civil Rights Act –Strengthened 1964 Civil Rights Act Sexual Harassment –Unwelcome or unwanted advances, requests for favors or other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature. Handled by the EEOC.
