The Howard University Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee RESPONSIBILITY Reviewing protocols, animal care and use programs, and University animal facilities to ensure compliance with Federal standards and regulatory requirements.

The Howard University Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee TASKS  Improving the health care for animal species used as pets, evaluating new drug therapies, and understanding the mechanisms of diseases that afflict humans and animals.  Providing excellent care for animals used in research, to gain the maximum amount of information from every animal used, and to minimize procedures that have potential for discomfort, distress, or pain.

The Howard University Institutional Bio- Safety Committee TASKS  Maintaining compliance when it comes to the use and disposal of hazarous material.  Reviewing and approving protocols prescribing the use of biohazardous, radioactive, and recombinant DNA material in animals.  Providing annual training sessions for researchers who require the use of biohazardous, radioactive, and recombinant DNA material for research.
