Student Fee Board Program Interview Program: Loft Interviewee: Dan Tarker

Fund Resources& Usage State funds ($144,885), S&A fee ($42,627), and a Perkins Grant ($15,000). Total: 202,512 The majority of budget is paying tutors and director’s wage. About $3,000 goes toward clerical goods. –These goods include clerical supplies like pencils, paperclips, staples, and other items that students use as well.

Assessment & Feedback Collect student ID numbers and run years reports to collect demographic information. Periodically run student retention reports Quarterly student satisfaction survey Open door policy Monthly staff meetings encourage tutors to provide feedbacks.

If faced with limited funds Prioritize providing tutoring services for as many hours a day as the budget will allow. However, any further reduction in funding will result in another reduction in hours.

Collaborations Loft director attends English department meetings and interfaces with a variety of other college faculty. Regularly invite faculty and staff to attend tutor training meetings. Launched an Ambassador program where assign a tutor to act as a liaison with an English instructor teaching a developmental course.

Accommodate students with different needs The Loft embrace and respect diversity by: –Encouraging staff to attend multicultural events on campus, periodically invite speakers to Loft trainings to address these issues –Having an entire section devoted to this topic in Loft new online tutor training course.

Values and Impacts Offering comprehensive educational opportunities Creating a highly supportive learning environment Students who use tutoring services (the Loft & MLC) were 50% more likely to stay enrolled than students who did not use these services.

Goals & Sustainability Goal: Tutoring Services Unified: Unify the system of hire and train tutors, track student hours, and seek funding opportunities. Sustainability: They began rationing paper to make sure printing was not being abused. Use scratch paper as note pads.

How can we help your program succeed? Dan said: “Being strong advocates for tutoring services on campus. With another round of budget cuts looming on the horizon, we could be severely impacted should the Executive Team look toward us to reduce our budget again. ”
