AMERICAN HISTORY BY MOAZZAM KHAN AND MING YI XU

Colonial America  European rulers wanted to start colonies in north America.  There were reasons of them starting colonies there  They thought that they will find gold  They thought that they would be very wealthy after they start the colonies there and they will also be able to find a sea route to Asia for trade

Moving in  In 1606 the king of England gave the Virginia company a charter to start a settlement in Virginia colony  In this time period Virginia included much of the east coast of north America  Later on in 1607 more than 100 colonists arrived in north America  They chose their site along the James river in present day virginia

settlement  It was not really easy for the colonists to move in.  It was really hard for them  Many did not know how to farm  Many of them went hungry  Now what helped them survived was trade with the native Americans  Later in the day when more colonists moved in the relations of colonists and the native American weakened

government  In 1619 the first representative government met in the James town  They met in what they call house of burgesses  That was when the laws and rules were made for the entire Virginia colony.

 Successful------achieving desired results.  Included------being part of the whole.  Boundary something that indicates bounds or limits.  Settlement------the act state of settling or the state of being settled.

 Pilgrims

 In England, everyone had to belong to the same religion. The Pilgrims wanted to settle in North America to have religious freedom. Their ship, the Mayflower, was blown off-course. They landed north of the Virginia Colony’s boundary.  The Pilgrims decided to settle on Cape Cod Bay, even though it wasn’t part of the Virginia Colony. Because of this, the Pilgrims had to form their own government. They created a plan for government called the Mayflower Compact. The Pilgrims called their settlement Plymouth.

 In 1629, another group seeking religious freedom sailed to North America. The Puritans settled in Boston, north of Plymouth. They named their colony the Massachusetts Bay Colony. It was very successful. Soon, thousands more Puritans moved there.
