Part 5- Essay: Extended Responses

1. The main component that our body is looking for when we breathe in is oxygen. When we breathe out, we exhale carbon dioxide. What happens to the oxygen inside the body and how does it get turned into carbon dioxide? Think about external, internal and cellular respiration.

2. How would smoking affect your personally? How would it affect the activities that you currently participate in? Discuss how your life would change if you made a choice to smoke. Be sure to include specific things that you do that would be effected. Also, make sure to list short term and long term effects of smoking that you want to avoid by not smoking.

3. Once we chew and swallow food, the journey is not over. Eventually the food you swallowed makes its way to the bloodstream for energy. Describe the process of digestion from swallowing until that food gets to your bloodstream. Be sure to mention the following digestion parts in your answer: stomach, esophagus, small intestine, liver and gall bladder.

4. At different points our blood was depicted as red and blue in pictures. What does that mean? What cause the change in our blood? Explain what happens to the blood during it’s trip around the circulatory system. Be sure to include the following parts in your answer: heart, aorta, lungs, muscles, vena cava.
