Mariah Davis Media affects on teenyboppers
What is media? Media is a means of mass communication that may involve television, magazines, music videos, the internet, and other forms of advertisement.
Media can be very beneficial especially in this day and age however it has an unfortunate effect and hold on our young generations.
Media effects teenagers by controlling their every decision. Teenagers discover new trends through media and not all are appropriate. As stated in an article on Buzzle.com, “Teens have a distorted idea of what sex is all about as the media portrays it to be normal to indulge in, therefore enacting what they see and often getting caught up in teen pregnancies and contracting std’s”.
Why does this matter? If children are growing up with the idea that indulging in whatever is deemed “cool” it will result in more teenage pregnancies, drug use, school drop outs, and criminal behavior. Stated in everydaylife.globalpost.com, “at a developmental stage when teens seek greater freedom and independence, the glorification of drugs, alcohol, risky sexual and violent behaviors in the media make it challenging for teens to make responsible behavioral choices”.
Who does this affect? Medias negative influence on young minds affects everyone. We all have to go through the same stages of life and we all have to grow up. Forming these ideals at a young age will result in the continual of this at an adult age. If our country was solely full of teen moms, drug users, high school drop outs, and criminals, we would not have the same country we do today.
How long has this been an issue and how can we help? Multimedia has had a negative hold on young audiences for many years. It has been an argumentative subject amongst censoring the media for those young viewers for a long time and will remain to be an issue unless there is change. WHO SAYS a girl at 16 need to be 34C bra size with a tiny waist line and Kim K booty? No one should have to look at an image and be disappointed they don’t resemble it. Many television shows glorify sex specifically to reach a young audience. This only rushes teenagers into making the big step when they really aren't ready, but since they saw it on T.V. it must be ok, right?......
If we want to finally put a stop to this nonsense we need to be direct and bold. When the magazine companies start putting people of all shapes and sizes on their covers, and the T.V. stations stop glorifying sex, violence, and drug use amongst teens, then we no longer have such a serious issue at hand.
