BASIC PHENOMENON OF ELECTRICITY GENERATION

BASIC COMPONENT 1. BOILER 2. TURBINE 3. ALTERNATOR 4. DEAERATOR 5. HEAT EXCHANGERS 6. SUPER HEATER 7. ECONOMIZERS 8. CONDENSOR 9. FEED WATER HEATER 10. AIR PREHEATER 11. COOLING TOWERS 12. ASH HANDLING PLANT

1.BOILER The boiler is also termed as, ‘ steam generator’ is a container in which water can be fed and by the application of heat evaporated continuously into steam. The heat source is obtained by burning the fuel, which is coal. Water circulates in the water walls the heat energy is applied to the water walls and water converted into steam, this steam is fed into upper heaters to remove water particles to obtained superheated steam is fed into superheater where water particles is completely removed & finally fed to turbine.

BOILER SYSTEMS:-

TYPES OF BOILER:- 1. Fire tube or "fire in tube" boilers; contain long steel tubes through which the hot gasses from a furnace pass and around which the water to be converted to steam circulates. 2. Water tube or "water in tube" boilers in which the conditions are reversed with the water passing through the tubes and the hot gasses passing outside the tubes.

2.TURBINE Turbine, rotary engine that converts the energy of a moving stream of water, steam, or gas into mechanical energy. The basic element in a turbine is a wheel or rotor This mechanical energy is the transferred through a drive shaft to operate a machine. Turbines are classified as hydraulic, or water, turbines, steam turbines, or gas turbines.

3.ALTERNATOR An alternator is electrical generator that converts mechanical energy to ectrical energy in the form of alternating current. the stator windings of generator by the interaction of rotating magnetic field. Rotating magnetic field is created by field windings mounted on rotor shaft with the help of excitation system. When the shaft is rotated at 3000 RPM by the coupled turbine electric power is generated at a voltage 16.5 KV and 50 HZ frequency. Generator is filled with hydrogen gas for cooling its winding which in turn is cooled by circulating water. The voltage of such generated electricity is step up to 220kv or 400kv through transformer and power transmitted to Ratangarh GSS for Northern Grid, and different areas of Rajasthan. 6.0 million units energy is generated in 250 MW unit in a single day, out of this about ten percent is consumed in unit itself for running its auxiliary equipments like pumps, fans etc. about 3300 metric tons of coal is consumed in one 250 MW unit in one day.

4.DEAERATOR A deaerator is a device that is widely used for the removal of air and other dissolved gases from the feed water to steam generating boilers In particular, dissolved oxygen in boiler feedwaters will cause serious It also combines with any dissolved carbon dioxide to form carbonic acid. Most deaerators are designed to remove oxygen down to levels of 7 ppb by weight (0.0005 cm³/L) or less.

5.HEAT EXCHANGER A heat exchanger is a device it used to transfer heat between one or more fluids . *TYPES:- 1.Shell & Tube type heat exchanger 2.Compact type heat exchanger 3.Air cooled type heat exchanger

6.SUPER HEATER Super heater are meant to raise temp. of steam, the saturation temp.by absorbing heat from flue gases limiting the value the boiler is 540 drg.c. super heater eliminate the formulation of condensate during transporting of steam in pipe lines & inside the early stage of the turbine which is harmful for turbine blades.

7.ECONOMIZERS

8.CONDENSER

9.FEED WATER HEATER The feed water heating equipment then raises the temperature of the water by utilizing extraction steam from various stages of the turbine. Preheating the feed water reduces the irreversibility's involved in steam generation

10.AIR PREHEATER preheater is a heat exchanger in which air temprature raised by transferring heat from other fluid such as flue gases. Since air heater cab be successfully employed to reclaim heat from flue gas at lower temp. level thus heat ejected to chimney is reduced, hence boiler efficiency is increased

11.COOLING TOWER A cooling tower is an equipment used to reduce the temperature of a water stream by extracting heat from water and emitting it to the atmosphere. Cooling towers make use of evaporation where by some of the water is evaporated into a moving air stream and subsequently discharged into the atmosphere.

13.ASH HANDLING PLANT The ash handling system provide for continuous collection of bottom ash from furnace hearth & its intermittent removal by hydro ejectors to a common slurry sump. Each boiler is provided with ash precipitator for collecting the fly ash from flues gases
