Metal Design Safety SAFETY FIRST!

Safety Goggles Always wear when using the following machinery Buffing wheels Soldering Pickle pot Drill press Advance levels: Patinas (advanced levels) Foredom tool (advanced levels)

Clean Up~ Do your assigned Job Everyday Clean up in metal design is imperative to a safe work environment Backpacks must be stored underneath your tables Clean up any liquids you spill DO NOT leave gas tanks on at the end of the day DO NOT leave your work out, in pickle pot or tumbler Put everything away on your tables NO EATING IN THE METAL DESIGN STUDIO Clay dust & glass shards are not good to inhale…..ever

Sawing Jewelers saw is used to cut designs from sheet metal Teeth on saw blades must face DOWN & OUT Always saw away from your body Do not place fingers in line of sawing Hold saw gently, do not grip tightly Use bur life to make your life easier!

Drill Press Used to pierce holes in sheet metal MUST WEAR GOGGLES AT ALL TIMES! MUST TIE HAIR BACK DO NOT WEAR LOSE CLOTHING PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR PIECE WHEN YOU ARE DRILLING Make sure drill bit is clean & is not wobbly Do not pick up your metal until drill is stopped

Buffing Wheels Used to “finish” your work, removes scratches & polishes Two step process: Step One: Blue Luxi Removes fine scratches Step Two: White Luxi Polishes work & makes it bling MUST WEAR GOGGLES TIE HAIR NO LOSE CLOTHING BUFF IN SAFE ZONE ONLY (BOTTOM OF WHEEL)

Eye Protection There are many small objects that can be hazardous in metal design Patinas Pickle Soldering Buffing Drilling Wire nipping (always aim down or stop wire with fingers) Follow instructions & use them when directed!!

Soldering Torches We use acetylene gas for soldering & Oxy-propalyne for casting Torch use MUST FOLLOW TEACHER INSTRUCTION AT ALL TIMES Acetylene is the third hottest natural chemical flame (with oxygen 6,000 degrees F) Safety Hazards Data Sheet

Soldering 3 rules of successful soldering are: No gaps Equal heat Clean metal Sweat Soldering: Soldering sheet metal to sheet metal Silver solder: melts to bond copper, brass, nickel or sterling silver

Soldering Torches Turn gas ON: Turn tank valve wrench 180 degrees counter clockwise (left) and turn the regulator knob 2-3 turns clockwise (right) Must do this SLOWLY so valve does not pop off Test gas flow by opening the torch valve & listening for gas at the stem Regulator gauge (BLACK OR RED & GOLD KNOB) controls gas pressure Only use on copper, brass, nickel & sterling silver metals DO NOT TORCH ANYTHING ELSE

Solder Torches Turn gas OFF: Turn the regulator knob all the way counter clockwise (out) Turn tank valve wrench 180 degrees clockwise (right), open torch valve until all gas is drained from hose, close the torch valve.

Soldering Flint Striker: Creates the Spark to light the torch Ventilation: Turn on when Soldering Gas Leak will have a rotten egg smell If you smell a leak, NEVER light a torch nearby

Eye Safety Familiarize yourself with the eye wash in the classroom (temporarily at back sink) Many chemicals when splashed into the eye need to be rinsed within 10 seconds to stop stinging, burning, & blindness. DO NOT mess around with ANY chemicals in which you are not instructed on ingredients & proper use Patinas- can cause blindness Pickles-made with acid can cause severe burning

Pickle Pot Acid solution: can burn Eyes & skin (cuts) Used to clean metal Oxidation/after soldering Darkening of metal due to exposure to oxygen Copper, brass & sterling Silver Must use COPPER TONGS ONLY! Steal will ruin the pickle solution

Terms Annealing: to soften non-ferrous metal by heating to red hot and then rapidly cooling in water Quench: to dip metal into a bath of water to rapidly cool Flux: helps solder to flow when soldering Collet: is the collar that tightens the torch head to the handle (listen for gas leaks) Torch Head & Hose: check hose before soldering for holes or punctures
